New top story on Hacker News: Launch HN: Fuzzbuzz (YC W19) – Fuzzing as a Service
146 by evmunro | 76 comments on Hacker News.
Hey HN, We’re Everest, Andrei and Sabera, the founders behind Fuzzbuzz ( https://fuzzbuzz.io ) - a fuzzing as a service platform that makes fuzzing your code as easy as writing a unit test, and pushing to GitHub. Fuzzing is a type of software testing that generates & runs millions of tests per day on your code, and is great at finding edge cases & vulnerabilities that developers miss. It’s been used to find tens of thousands of critical bugs in open-source software ( https://ift.tt/2fW71Bd ), and is a great way to generate tests that cover a lot of code, without requiring your developers to think of every possibility. It achieves such great results by applying genetic algorithms to generate new tests from some initial examples, and using code coverage to track and report interesting test cases. Combining these two techniques with a bit of randomness, and running tests thousands of times every second has proven to be an incredibly effective automated bug finding technique. I was first introduced to fuzzing a couple years ago while working on the Clusterfuzz team at Google, where I built Clusterfuzz Tools v1 ( https://ift.tt/2jAJEvW ). I later built Maxfuzz ( https://ift.tt/2IG5rDY ), a set of tools that makes it easier to fuzz code in Docker containers, while on the Coinbase security team. As we learned more about fuzzing, we found ourselves wondering why very few teams outside of massive companies like Microsoft and Google were actively fuzzing their code - especially given the results (teams at Google that use fuzzing report that it finds 80% of their bugs, with the other 20% uncovered by normal tests, or in production). It turns out that many teams don’t want to invest the time and money needed to set up automated fuzzing infrastructure, and using fuzzing tools in an ad-hoc way on your own computer isn’t nearly as effective as continuously fuzzing your code on multiple dedicated CPUs. That’s where Fuzzbuzz comes in! We’ve built a platform that integrates with your existing GitHub workflow, and provide an open API for integrations with CI tools like Jenkins and TravisCI, so the latest version of your code is always being fuzzed. We manage the infrastructure, so you can fuzz your code on any number of CPUs with a single click. When bugs are found, we’ll notify you through Slack and create Jira tickets or GitHub Issues for you. We also solve many of the issues that crop up when fuzzing, such as bug deduplication, and elimination of false positives. Fuzzbuzz currently supports C, C++, Go and Python, with more languages like Java and Javascript on the way. Anyone can sign up for Fuzzbuzz and fuzz their code on 1 dedicated CPU, for free. We’ve noticed that the HN community has been increasingly interested in fuzzing, and we’re really looking forward to hearing your feedback! The entire purpose of Fuzzbuzz is to make fuzzing as easy as possible, so all criticism is welcome.

Pedro strike and Trippier howler lift Sarri and give Chelsea win over Spurs
Maurizio Sarri, in time, may point to this as the victory which breathed life into his tenure as Chelsea’s head coach – the moment when all the doubts that had infected his team over the winter months gave way to newfound belief in the Italian’s methods. That, at least, must be the long-term hope. For now he can bask in a timely win over bitter rivals which has earned him significant respite after a desperate few weeks.
Tottenham, their display as troublingly disjointed as in defeat at Burnley a few days previously and with Saturday’s derby against Arsenal looming ever larger, ended embarrassed here with Kieran Trippier inexplicably placing a back pass wide of an on-rushing Hugo Lloris six minutes from time. The ball trickled unaided over the line with Willian in hot pursuit and those in the Matthew Harding stand already bouncing gleefully in celebration. The crowing din of the home support will have pursued the visitors from the arena.

Sadio Mané and Virgil van Dijk lead rampant Liverpool past Watford
To revive an old and unfulfilled prophecy of Gérard Houllier’s, Liverpool truly are 10 games from greatness. They have faltered recently and lost their attacking verve along the route but, far from feeling the pressure of the title race, they revelled in it against Watford on Wednesday night. The Premier League leaders were insatiable, unstoppable and clinical as they recorded the biggest victory of what Jürgen Klopp hopes will be the breakthrough season for his club.
The Liverpool manager gave an Oscar-winner’s speech, eulogising all those who had made the victory possible and acknowledging he may have forgotten somebody. It was a lengthy list. Mohamed Salah was “unplayable” according to Klopp. Trent Alexander‑Arnold “brilliant” as he returned to the side with vengeance plus a hat-trick of inch-perfect assists. Fabinho appeared to run central midfield single-handedly, although that does a disservice to those around him. Sadio Mané scored twice, the second an audacious and glorious finish, as did Virgil van Dijk with two towering late headers. Divock Origi chipped in with a fine goal as he replaced Roberto Firmino.

Sergio Agüero’s contentious penalty takes Manchester City past West Ham
As a measure of what an unexpectedly difficult night this was for Manchester City, it was the first game all season they have failed to score two goals or more in the league at their own ground. No other side has managed that kind of record over a 15-game period in the top division since Tottenham in 1965 and, in the case of Pep Guardiola’s team, their previous assignment here was a 6-0 rampage against Chelsea.

Manchester United roll on as Romelu Lukaku seizes chance at Crystal Palace
Ole Gunnar Solskjær had sounded the call to arms. Manchester United were in the midst of an injury crisis and it was incumbent on a big player to step up from the fringes to save them. The caretaker manager named names, too. He wanted to see Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sánchez play to their potential.
It was Lukaku who delivered. The striker blew a glorious chance in the eighth minute but he did not go into his shell, far from it. He put United in control with two excellent finishes, one with either foot – the first from the edge of the penalty area – and, although Crystal Palace fought back to score through Joel Ward, it was Lukaku who helped to ensure that his team had the final word.

Luis Suárez scores twice as Barcelona beat Real Madrid to reach cup final
• Real Madrid 0-3 Barcelona (Barça win 4-1 on agg)
• Suárez 50, 72; Varane 69og
For Barcelona, there is something about the Santiago Bernabéu. They came to the home of their greatest rivals needing a victory to take them to a record sixth consecutive Copa del Rey final and while that task may appear titanic for most teams, Barça are not most teams: they have made a habit of silencing this stadium and they did so againon Wednesday, two goals from Luis Suárez and an own goal from Raphaël Varane completing a 3-0 win to go with the 6-2, 4-3, 3-2, 4-0 and 3-1 victories they have collected here in the last decade.
If those were successes secured on a superiority that was often startling, this was different, but in the end Barcelona went through. They had struggled for an hour but survived and prevailed. It was not easy to explain, except through extreme efficiency: two of Barcelona’s four shots were on target and they scored three. Madrid had 14 in total and did not score.

Mesut Özil shows his class as Arsenal hit five past Bournemouth
At times like this all seems swell in Mesut Özil’s world. Under the gleam of the lights, finding space and time on a football pitch, his talent unfurled again. Arsenal’s enigmatic playmaker, who has looked like Unai Emery’s type all too infrequently during this problematic season, illuminated this match with an exhibition of golden touches.
Yes, there is the caveat that Bournemouth are on a painful losing run away from home. It’s pretty unlikely he will be trusted with the intensity of Tottenham away on Saturday but even Emery must have gone home scratching his head at how the player who has been his biggest battle this season could also look like such a blessing.

Ward-Prowse helps Southampton to comfortable win over lifeless Fulham
If Fulham’s Premier League obituary had not already been written, then this will likely be remembered as the night they lost their fight for survival, as Southampton coasted to a rare routine victory. Even the eternal optimist, Claudio Ranieri, who headed straight down the tunnel at the final whistle after watching his lifeless team succumb to an eighth defeat in nine matches, is battling to put on a brave face. Fulham, who are 10 points from safety, need a miracle, and fast, if they are to avoid an instant return to the Championship.
As for Fulham’s disenchanted supporters, who sorely miss the swagger with which they won promotion, they are resigned to their fate and have already raised the white flag. To make matters worse, they face Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City in three of their next four matches. After their recent run the damage those sides could inflict does not bear thinking about.

Scottish roundup: Celtic give Neil Lennon a fright before late winner
• Celtic maintain eight-point lead with 2-1 win at Hearts
• Rangers enjoy easy 4-0 success over Dundee
Neil Lennon’s second spell at Celtic began with a last-gasp 2-1 win at Hearts in a fiery encounter that included the home side’s Jamie Brandon being sent off.
The interim manager, who replaced Leicester-bound Brendan Rodgers on Tuesday and is in charge until the end of the season, found Hearts a tough nut to crack before the opener. Lennon – the former Hibernian manager, who was struck by a coin during an Edinburgh derby back in October – was delighted after James Forrest’s 36th-minute strike. The league leaders were helped further when Brandon appeared to lead with an arm during an aerial challenge on Jeremy Toljan and saw red. Hearts drew level thanks to Oliver Bozanic’s second-half penalty before Odsonne Édouard grabbed a injury-time winner for Celtic.

Stamford Bridge No 2 steps out for a rare appearance in a comfortable win for Maurizio Sarri’s improving team
You can’t even, you can’t even, you can’t even make a sub. It took half an hour from kick-off for the Tottenham fans to find the best joke to date about Chelsea’s latest psychodrama on the theme of authority and control.
And yet by the end that wheel had turned completely. It was instead the Chelsea fans who cheered their team and taunted the away support, after a performance of fire and purpose by a team that is constantly in the process of dying and resurrecting itself, west London’s own zombie FC.

Kepa and Sarri are actors in the soap opera of football social media | Marina Hyde
Even by the standards of non-apology apologies, Kepa Arrizabalaga’s first effort to address The Unpleasantness during Sunday’s League Cup final refined an art form. Politicians everywhere should draw inspiration from the Chelsea keeper, whose decision to decline to be substituted by Maurizio Sarri is regarded by some as the harbinger of Britain’s complete social breakdown (more on that possibility later).
First, though, to events at Wembley Stadium. As Kepa put it in a statement issued in the immediate wake of the action: “I regret how the end of the match has been portrayed.” As always with these passive formulations, one is left to surmise who or what is the subject of the verb. In this case, given the verb in question is “portrayed” and the events in question were taking place on the medium of live television, delivered in real time via multiple camera angles, the subject of the verb is basically “your own eyes”. Kepa is accusing your own eyes of stitching him up.

The January signings who are proving big hits across Europe
The transfer window hasn’t changed much in the Premier League but some new signings are impressing on the continent
By Martin Laurence for WhoScored
A month after the January transfer window closed, one could almost forget it happened for most Premier League clubs. Very few players made eye-catching transfers and even fewer have gone on to make a significant impact at their new club.
Gonzalo Higuaín’s move to Chelsea was perhaps the biggest of the month and he enjoyed an impressive start in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge, scoring twice against Huddersfield in his home league debut. However, he hasn’t scored since then and did not start for Chelsea in the League Cup final. New signings have had a bit more success across the continent. Here are six who have made an immediate impression at their new clubs.

Despised by club coaches as season interrupters, endured by bone-weary players, and met with something often scarcely warmer than indifference by fans, international friendlies, and by association friendly tournaments, have long been maligned in the men’s football calendar.

Huddersfield’s Steve Mounié finds reward at the last to see off tame Wolves
At last Huddersfield have lift-off. Not from the foot of the table, naturally, but a first win in three months and the first points gained since David Wagner’s departure were secured through a stoppage-time goal from Steve Mounié, just as a forgettable game seemed to be drifting towards a scoreless draw.
“I’m so proud,” Jan Siewert said. “The players deserved it so much because you couldn’t believe how they have suffered in recent weeks, they have been so unlucky but still they work and fight.”

Sergio Ramos set for increased ban after Uefa charge him for 'deliberate' booking
- Ramos shown yellow card against Ajax in Champions League
- Geoffrey Kondogbia received two-match ban for same offence
Uefa have charged Sergio Ramos with deliberately picking up a yellow card during Real Madrid’s Champions League last-16 match against Ajax. The defender will find out on Thursday if he will face an extended suspension.
The Real Madrid captain was booked in the 89th minute of Madrid’s 2-1 victory in Amsterdam for a foul on Kasper Dolberg – his second booking in this year’s competition – and will miss next week’s second leg at the Bernabéu, serving his suspension before the team’s likely progress to the quarter-finals.

Crystal Palace’s Mamadou Sakho set to miss rest of season with knee injury
• Centre-back likely to have an operation
Crystal Palace expect to be without Mamadou Sakho for the rest of the season after he suffered a serious knee injury during Saturday’s victory at Leicester.
Tests have been conducted on the France defender to determine the extent of the damage and he is resigned to undergoing an operation. The centre-half’s right leg gave way as he passed the ball 15 minutes from time under slight pressure from Jamie Vardy and, while the 29-year-old was able to walk off gingerly, he was in clear discomfort as he was assisted to the dressing room by two members of the medical staff .

Mauricio Pochettino says Spurs’ lack of fight has scuppered their title bid
• Manager may face touchline ban for confronting Mike Dean
Mauricio Pochettino fears it could be 10 years before Tottenham develop the winning mentality needed to become champions. The manager takes his team to Chelsea on Wednesday night but he remains haunted by Saturday’s defeat at Burnley, a result he felt ended their title hopes and reminded him of the similarly damaging reverse at Watford in September.
Spurs had approached both games on winning streaks and with Pochettino repeatedly warning his players that they had to treat their lower-ranking opponents with focus and respect. He said the matches were akin to cup finals.

Reserve teams in the lower leagues? That idea doesn't even work in Spain
Pep Guardiola says Premier League clubs should have reserve teams in the Championship, but his argument doesn’t hold up
By Gavin Willacy for Playing in the Shadows
Pep Guardiola regularly suggests that English football should copy the B-team system he enjoyed in Spain, where the biggest clubs enter their reserve sides into the lower leagues, some rising as high as the second tier. The Manchester City manager thinks adopting the Spanish model would help young players gain more experience of senior football and toughen them up.
“They would compete every weekend with real games, fighting to survive – then the managers in the Premier League will have more courage to pick them,” says Guardiola. “The second teams in Spain, at Barcelona or Real Madrid, play in front of 40,000 people and every weekend in the second league. In Italy or Germany, they are so tough, so demanding, they are playing with guys who are 28, 29 or 30 and that is the best way to improve, not training with the first team sometimes.”

Jürgen Klopp says Roberto Firmino injury not as bad as first thought – video
'We were obviously lucky. It's not as serious as we thought in the first moment,' Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp said about the injury that forced Roberto Firmino off the field in his team's goalless draw to Manchester United on Sunday. 'If Bobby goes down ... then it's always a bad sign because [he's] a pretty hard boy.' But Klopp believes there is a good chance the Brazilian striker would be involved in Wednesday's Premier League match at home to Watford, saying, 'Writing Bobby off is actually a big mistake because he recovers pretty quick.'

'I want no excuses': Pep Guardiola warns Manchester City players about tiredness – video
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said he doesn't want to hear any excuses about 'tiredness, schedules, fixtures or how many games' from his players ahead of their Premier League match against West Ham. Guardiola’s side are second, one point behind Liverpool, and although they are also competing for the Champions League and FA Cup – having already claimed the Carabao Cup on Sunday – the manager believes the drive to retain the title should override any fatigue.

New top story on Hacker News: Launch HN: OurWorldInData (YC W19 Nonprofit) – Data on World’s Largest Problems
234 by Hannah_OWID | 57 comments on Hacker News.
Hi HN! We’re Hannah, Esteban, Jaiden and Max, the founders of Our World in Data ( https://ift.tt/1qL7FUP ). We’re a nonprofit in the YC W19 batch. Our World in Data is a website that shows how and why global living conditions and the earth's environment are changing. Is the world becoming more violent? Is an end to poverty possible? It's hard to know because daily news focuses on negative single events, and misses long-lasting changes that reshape the world. We’re a group of researchers from the University of Oxford trying to solve this problem. We bring together data and research from many different sources often buried under jargon in static, outdated documents. We present a global perspective on living conditions and environmental change through interactive data visualizations and short explainers. Max started Our World in Data in 2013 whilst working as a researcher at the University of Oxford. The project was born from a frustration that we are so poorly informed about how the world is changing—we fail to notice the important developments shaping our world and are not aware what is possible for the future. It has now evolved into a full-time project with a small team of researchers and web developers (we’ll be looking for a new web developer this week!). We’re all driven by the same motivation: to make sure data and research on how the world is changing is free and accessible for everyone. We cover many topics, ranging from poverty to health, environment, energy, education, and violence. Our data and analysis are available at global, regional and country levels. And we try to provide the longest-term data we can, often going back many decades or centuries. We average more than 1M users per month; these range from policymakers to journalists, academics to school teachers. But we’ve also had some use cases that took us by surprise: To many readers it’s unexpected to see that the world has made substantial progress in important aspects and psychologists have recently told us that they use our website to help patients with depression and anxiety. We did not expect this use of our work at all and asked them for more details. One of them explained: “Facts can be a powerful weapon against fear, a gloomy worldview, learned helplessness. So I help clients find facts at Our World in Data.” We usually work remotely, because we are not all based in the same country—this is the first time that we were able to find a 3-month window of time to move to California and work together. We come from a university environment and applied to YC because we wanted learn from the startup and the technology world. The work at YC and the contact with the partners and other founders have definitely given us an entirely new perspective on how to work. We’re here at HN because we are sure we can learn a lot from the community here. We knew there had been HN threads on aspects of our work before – but after a recent search ( http://bit.ly/OWID-searches-on-HN ) we had no idea there were so many. It’s amazing to see that these posts created such great discussion within the HN community. Our website is here: https://ift.tt/1qL7FUP . We are a non-profit and all our work is entirely free; open access research (Creative Commons licensed) and open source code. If you’re interested in supporting this with a donation to us you can do so here: https://ift.tt/2T56Qc8 . Or if you have any other queries, you can reach out at hannah@ourworldindata.org. We would really appreciate any feedback you have on what we can do better. Thank you!

Revealed: the evidence Crewe supplied on Barry Bennell scandal
• Overnight stays for boys encouraged as part of club culture
Evidence supplied by Dario Gradi related to the Barry Bennell scandal can be revealed by the Guardian and includes an admission that he encouraged the culture at Crewe Alexandra for coaches to invite boys to stay overnight, or even take them on holidays abroad, and that he did not make detailed background checks on the man who has been described as one of the most persistent paedophiles in British criminal history.
Gradi, suspended by the Football Association since December 2016, states that he never had any suspicions about his youth-team coach during seven years as colleagues and indicates that one of the reasons why Crewe did not seek a reference from Manchester City, Bennell’s previous club, was because they were trying to poach him on the quiet.

Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga fined after admitting to ‘big mistake’
• ‘I want to apologise to the coach and to the club’
Kepa Arrizabalaga has apologised to the Chelsea head coach, Maurizio Sarri, his teammates and the club’s supporters for refusing to be substituted late in the Carabao Cup final, with the world’s most expensive goalkeeper fined one week’s wages – around £190,000 – for his act of petulance.
Chelsea have sought to draw a line under the incident after Arrizabalaga’s show of dissent at Wembley, put down to a misunderstanding in the immediate aftermath of the defeat by Manchester City on penalties, publicly undermined Sarri’s authority. The Italian has found himself under mounting pressure of late with open revolt erupting in the stands over his tactics during the recent FA Cup elimination by Manchester United, and Arrizabalaga’s actions had fuelled the suspicion that a mutinous mood was now spreading on to the pitch.

Leicester set to make quick move for Brendan Rodgers as new manager
• Club believe they can hire Rodgers this season
• Celtic would demand £5m in compensation
Leicester City are stepping up attempts to hire Brendan Rodgers as their new manager immediately, with the club believing there is now the prospect of him being coaxed from Celtic before the end of the season.
Rodgers is Leicester’s principal candidate to replace Claude Puel, who was sacked on Sunday. The former Liverpool manager has privately insisted he will finish this season in Glasgow, where Celtic remain on course to win a third domestic treble in succession. However, Leicester are keen to push for a quick appointment and thereby prepared to test the resolve both of Celtic and their manager.

Manchester City’s quadruple bid: no longer highly improbable, just improbable | Barney Ronay
It is probably fair to say Manchester City’s in-house team made the fawning soft-focus documentary All or Nothing a year too soon. “Guys we are so close!”. That was your catchphrase. Except, they weren’t really.
City won the Premier League by a mile last year thanks to a run of sustained sublime form. But otherwise their season lost its dramatic tension on 4 April when City were eviscerated by Liverpool in the Champions League quarter-final first leg, shrinking the scope of their ambitions to that near-perfect league season. Fast forward 10 months and Sunday’s slow-burn victory in the Carabao Cup final has set up a fascinating point of contrast; one of those moments where the background noise starts to fall away and it makes sense, for the first time, to contemplate the wildly improbable.

Nottingham Forest’s Yohan Benalouane strikes early to seal win over Derby
Yohan Benalouane picked the perfect time to score his first Nottingham Forest goal, his second-minute strike handing the Reds victory over bitter rivals Derby at the City Ground.
The French defender, sporting a mask to protect a facial injury, scrambled home an effort which was enough to secure the Brian Clough Trophy and also to boost their play-off hopes. Forest’s win takes them up to eighth, within one point of Derby and three of sixth-placed Bristol City.

Marco Silva has said he has to vindicate Everton’s expensive decision to appoint him as manager, starting with a “must-win” Premier League game at Cardiff City on Tuesday.
Silva met Everton’s majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri during an enforced 17-day break between games for what he claimed were confident talks about their long-term plans.

A man has been arrested by German police after a Manchester City supporter was left fighting for his life following the club’s Champions League game against Schalke.

Rafael Benítez says Sean Longstaff should receive England call
• ‘Sean wouldn’t look out of place with England,’ says manager
• Academy graduate has made seven appearances for Newcastle
Rafael Benítez expects Newcastle United’s young central midfielder Sean Longstaff to receive an imminent England call-up, most probably to Aidy Boothroyd’s under-21 side.
The 21-year-old academy graduate from North Shields has made only seven appearances in Benítez’s first team but is already being compared to Michael Carrick. Longstaff’s assurance on the ball, passing range and vision are currently keeping more senior midfielders, most notably Jonjo Shelvey, on the sidelines and Newcastle’s manager awaits a call from St George’s Park.

Kepa farce distracted his teammates and disrespected the entire game | Richard Williams
Just two weeks ago we were mourning the death of England’s greatest goalkeeper, a man who did his job without fuss. It would be presumptuous to guess the reaction of Gordon Banks, were he still alive, to the behaviour of Kepa Arrizabalaga in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday but it’s hard to imagine any footballer of his generation not being appalled by the young Basque’s display of insubordination, for which he belatedly apologised on Monday evening.
It is not just the orientation of the Wembley pitch from north-south to east-west that has been radically modified since Banks enjoyed his finest hour on the turf now so arrogantly desecrated by Arrizabalaga’s refusal to accept his substitution. Chelsea’s payment of £71.6m to bring the 24-year-old to the Premier League, and the wages of £70m that he is due to receive over the seven years of his contract, belong to a different planet from the one inhabited by a man whose career began in the era of the £20 maximum wage.

AAIB queries whether pilot David Ibbotson was licensed to carry footballer
The plane that crashed in the Channel carrying the Cardiff City footballer Emiliano Sala fell thousands of feet in the space of 20 seconds after making a 180-degree turn, minutes after the pilot requested a descent, air accident investigators have found.
The wreckage of the Piper Malibu light aircraft was found on the seabed 30 metres from where final radar readings located it at an altitude of 1,600ft (488 metres), suggesting it dropped almost vertically in its final moments, according to an interim report from the Air Accident Investigations Board.
