With the group stage in Russia done and dusted, we reveal our best XI, as voted by Guardian readers

All the 48 group-stage matches in Russia have now been played and after each of them we have asked our readers to hand out their player ratings. The verdicts have then been inputted into our guide of all the 736 players at the 2018 World Cup – and we have now gone through them to see who makes our team of the tournament so far.

Colombia’s Davinson Sánchez ready for battle with Spurs clubmate Harry Kane

• Tottenham players in regular contact on WhatsApp
• Sánchez: ‘If I play against him, I’ll try to stop him’

The Tottenham Hotspur player WhatsApp group has taken a global twist. The club have 12 on World Cup duty, representing six nations and, whenever one of them or their teams do well, the messages and encouragement follow.

The tone of some of the exchanges may be different in the coming days or perhaps radio silence will descend out of necessity. Davinson Sánchez is the lone Spur in the Colombia squad and he has begun to prepare for Tuesday’s last-16 match with England.

Thiago Alcántara: ‘The most important thing in football is thinking fast’

The Spain midfielder admits his team are not at the top of their game but says they have ‘an enormous margin for improvement’

Iker Casillas lifted the World Cup coated in olive oil. He did from where Thiago Alcântara was sitting anyway. Spain against the Netherlands in Johannesburg in July 2010 is the biggest TV event in the country’s history and among the 15,605,000 people watching when the ball sat up in front of Andrés Iniesta 8,000km away were the country’s under-19s, together in the dining room at the Federation’s Las Rozas HQ north-west of Madrid, where they were preparing for the European Championship. Thiago remembers it well; he tells it well too. He stops, takes a deep, theatrical breath. Huuuh. “The pause,” he says. “That was the moment.

“Both teams were tired. Holland had their chances: we still had the fear from the Arjen Robben chance Iker had saved. There were nerves. You’re thinking: ‘Bloody hell, this is going to penalties.’ Suddenly, the ball’s there, and Andrés, and the goalkeeper is there, and everyone freezes. And then it turns out the way it turns out …

Gary Cahill says England ‘are very aware’ of threat posed by Radamel Falcao

• ‘He has been banging goals in since leaving Premier League’
• Colombia striker reignited his career in Ligue 1 with Monaco

Gary Cahill believes England will face a far more deadly Radamel Falcao when they play Colombia on Tuesday than the player who failed to make an impact in the Premier League.

From Cristiano Ronaldo in Germany in 2006, to Mario Balotelli and Luis Suárez in Brazil four years ago, England are painfully aware of the damage that can be inflicted by Premier League alumni on the big stage. Whether it is a keener awareness of the opposition or some deeper motivation to prove a point to those who doubted them, each has contributed significantly to England’s exit from the World Cup in tournaments past.

Uruguay and Portugal cross swords in fascinating reboot of el clásico

Luis Suárez and Cristiano Ronaldo will be on opposite sides in what promises to be a spectacular encounter in Sochi

Go on, admit it: one of the first things you thought of when the draw put Portugal and Uruguay together was the kind of thing nobody wants to see but everybody wants to see really. OK, maybe not everybody, and maybe you didn’t. Plenty, though, did. Just try typing Portugal, Uruguay and “shithousery” into Google.

On Friday though, Uruguay’s manager, Óscar Tabárez preferred to recall a different story and a whole different set of values, going back to the 1954 World Cup to tell a parable and question the “myths”, as he put it. Alongside, Luis Suárez sat captivated, silently gazing at him.

Minnesota United midfielder Collin Martin announced he is gay, making him the only active male athlete in the major professional sports leagues to come out.

Gareth Southgate: Maybe I’ve put more pressure on myself, maybe I haven’t

• England manager happy with decisions for Belgium game
• Southgate says Harry Kane was ‘brilliant’ about sitting it out

Gareth Southgate has conceded his honeymoon period as England manager is over and admitted the decision to rest so many players for the team’s final World Cup group game has left him open to criticism should the knockout tie with Colombia be lost.

The England players had accepted Southgate’s plan to make eight changes for the game against Belgium in Kaliningrad, where they were beaten 1-0, with the manager making a point of taking his captain, Harry Kane, to one side to explain his reasoning. The defeat has actually dropped England into a potentially more favourable side of the draw but, with momentum checked, Colombia represent awkward opponents in Tuesday’s last-16 tie in Moscow.

England must be wary of ‘formidable’ Colombia, warns Lukasz Fabianski

• ‘They tore us apart in group,’ admits Poland goalkeeper
• Midfield particularly strong with Rodríguez and Quintero

Lukasz Fabianski has warned England that Colombia are formidable opponents and capable of tearing teams apart if they get control of the game. Reflecting on the way in which Poland were comprehensively outclassed and outplayed by Colombia during their 3-0 defeat in Kazan, Fabianski described José Pekerman’s side as “the team to avoid at this stage” and highlighted the quality of their midfield in particular.

England face Colombia in Moscow on Tuesday after losing their final group game against Belgium on Thursday to finish second, with that 1-0 defeat putting Gareth Southgate’s side in the easier half of the draw in the eyes of some. Yet Fabianski, who made his first appearance at the World Cup finals in Poland’s 1-0 win over Japan, believes that England have made life a lot harder for themselves in another respect.

Russia prepare for ‘match of a lifetime’ against Spain after satisfying fans

• Country has few illusions about beating Spain in last 16
• Group stage has been largely drama-free for World Cup hosts

The bell tolls for Russia, the country’s first national team to make the knockout stages, and to say the fans are fatalistic would be an understatement.

Sunday Stanislav Cherchesov’s side come up against Spain, a squad loaded with more star power than Moscow has seen in the past half-century. “At least we’ll go out against the best,” one fan said after Tuesday’s 3-0 defeat by Uruguay when Russia’s round-of-16 opponents were confirmed.

Simon Mignolet set for talks over Liverpool future after World Cup

• Belgium goalkeeper has slipped down Anfield pecking order
• Mignolet: ‘After the World Cup I will look at everything’

Simon Mignolet will hold talks with Liverpool on the conclusion of Belgium’s World Cup campaign as he seeks to ascertain whether there will be first-team opportunities for him next season.

The goalkeeper, who had begun last season as Jürgen Klopp’s first-choice, made his most recent Premier League appearance on New Year’s Day and has played only once for his club, in the fourth round FA Cup defeat to West Bromwich Albion, since having fallen behind Loris Karius in the pecking order. The latter is due back for pre-season training on Monday with Klopp to assess his fellow German’s state of mind after his errors in the Champions League final defeat by Real Madrid.

Javier Mascherano’s legs may have gone but his heart has not

The 34-year-old midfielder is the epitome of the bronca, the spirit of defiance that so often propels Argentina, and a voice of reason in a chaotic campaign

Javier Mascherano has spent much of the past week looking beat up. He had a black eye as he gave a deeply necessary press conference last Saturday that helped stabilise Argentina, and finished Tuesday’s game against Nigeria with blood pouring from a cut eye and a scratched cheek. While his performance then had little to do with stability, his presence was still vital. If Mascherano was Argentina’s unacknowledged captain at the last World Cup, it has felt at times here that he has been their unacknowledged coach.

At times in St Petersburg there was something almost painful in watching Mascherano, at 34, look so off the pace. Every time a Nigerian ran at him, it seemed, he went past him. Again and again he gave the ball away. And yet at the same time, he was magnificent, constantly urging Argentina forward, organising and cajoling, his bloodied visage emblematic of the will that carried Argentina through to the last 16 despite themselves.

Flops XI: the players who misfired in the World Cup group stage

The World Cup is the biggest show on Earth but not all of the greatest players have shown up yet

By Martin Laurence for WhoScored, part of the Sport Network

The World Cup group stages are over, three quarters of the games have been played and half of the teams are on their way home. Plenty of big names are leaving the tournament having failed to live up to expectations and a few more have been given a second chance to impress after their underwhelming displays. We look at XI who will not look back fondly on the first 48 games of the tournament.

Quaresma chooses liberation over conformity with the outside of his boot | Barney Ronay

Football does not value the skill the forward showed against Iran but the World Cup should be an outlet for the unbound

There was a moment on Monday night in Kazan, as Ricardo Quaresma veered in off the right wing towards the Iran goal, shifting the angle of his body with a dinky little half-step, when you knew exactly what he was about to do.

José Mourinho must have had an inkling, watching from his shark-tank penthouse high above the Moscow skyline. “Quaresma will have to learn, otherwise he won’t play,” Mourinho had told reporters 10 years ago when Quaresma was one of his players at Internazionale. “I am sure he’ll change and become more tactically disciplined. Right now he likes kicking the ball with the outside of his foot.”

‘I love football because it’s the opposite of science: contradictory, primitive, emotional’

These days we know someone ran 12.345km during a game. An admirable figure but did he run to help? To get in the way? As he ran, did he think? We need the context. If not, let’s leave the numbers for something else

Let’s not allow the uncertainty of results, the patriotic feeling football provokes or the increasing money generated by this fantastic industry to distract us from the evolution of the game itself, the play. Regressive tactics advance at greater speed than creative ones and the obsession with statistics contributes to that.

At this World Cup, more than ever before, we want to know everything with mathematical precision, even though football is beautiful when two and two don’t make four. Or when South Korea beat Germany, say.

Why Wayne Rooney is joining MLS's worst club, DC United

The former England captain will find himself at a faded North American superpower. But they hope he will be the face of their climb back to the top

Wayne Rooney made his first visit to Washington DC earlier this month. Had he picked up a newspaper he’d have been faced with images of sporting celebration in the city. The Washington Capitals’ victorious run to the Stanley Cup final captivated his new hometown, not always the most obvious of sporting hotbeds.

ESPN analyst Michael Wilbon once called Washington a “minor league sports town,” but over 100,000 fans attended the Caps’ victory parade on 12 June. DC United, the team Rooney has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with, haven’t registered in this way for a long time, if ever.

Ask HN: What's the best way to handle internal tech support?
3 by underyx | 3 comments on Hacker News.
My company has around 1000 CS reps and 200 engineers. The CS reps very often need to ask the engineers questions, report bugs heard about from customers, etc. Us engineers also get bug reports about the internal tools we've developed for CS. Currently, all this is handled via a simple Slack channel. This is actually great, since there's no bureaucratic cost to getting in touch, unlike with a proper ticketing system, and having actual public conversations is the fastest way to resolve issues. But of course, we started seeing inefficiencies in other aspects. The same questions keep being asked over and over again. There's an FAQ linked in the channel topic and it's automatically posted in the channel every 12 hours, but it's still not enough, we still get tons of questions that could be self-solved without engineers' intervention. So, that made me curious, how are other companies handling this? Could we somehow maybe auto-respond to Slack messages with the correct answer with some bot, or just come up with something that actually makes people check the FAQs before posting? Or is there some way better solution to replace all this?

New top story on Hacker News: Launch HN: Brex (YC W17) – Corporate Credit Card for Startups

Launch HN: Brex (YC W17) – Corporate Credit Card for Startups
153 by hdubugras | 95 comments on Hacker News.
Hi HN – We are Henrique and Pedro of Brex ( https://brex.com/ ). We've built a corporate credit card for startups that has high limits, an instant online application and no personal guarantees. Pedro and I built our first payments business in Brazil, Pagar.me, when we were teenagers. We came to the U.S. to attend Stanford. We joined YC W17 and realized quickly – even with a seed round in the millions – that we could not get a corporate credit card. We are Brazilian, young, and do not have U.S. credit. Even if we did have credit – we know that personally guaranteeing a credit card makes no sense for a business (more on that later). In Brazil, we raised $300K initially (when we were 16) from an investor that was willing to take a chance on us. In Brazil, even though there are 200 million people, there is very little venture capital financing and limited startup infrastructure (accelerators, resources, technical talent, executives experienced with high growth). We knew that $300K was all we were getting, so we had to find a business that could be cash flow positive quickly. It was easier to do that accepting payments online (which naturally generates cash), but it was an operational challenge for sure. We were able to grow quickly in Brazil because we hit the market at the right time, as ecommerce was transitioning to online payments and because we, better than any of the foreign competitors, understood the nuance of Brazil. Specifically on that point, in Brazil the consumer has the option to pay for any card transaction in installments, and that requires a cash outflow for the merchant. Pagar.me figured out how to productize that best to the online market there. When we got to the U.S., we assumed that the payments system here would be significantly more mature and sophisticated than it was in Brazil, however that was not the case. Particularly on the issuing side (banks extending credit cards), there has been very little innovation or using technology to innovate on features. That is how Brex was born. Over the past year we’ve been incubating and improving and just launched with an online self-signup that lets you get access to a virtual card in minutes. We waited to launch until we had this feature, as we know how much of a pain it is to go through the back and forth of online and paper-based applications. Brex underwrites by connecting directly with your bank account, which means we can offer higher limits than other cards, often 10x-20x more. From a software perspective, we rebuilt all of the payments tech from scratch, which we learned how to do in our last business. Even then, to build Brex it was still grueling having to deal with the obscure regulations surrounding Know Your Customer (KYC), heavy oversight from banking partners, and complexities associated with interacting directly with Visa. In doing so, we built awesome features like instant virtual cards issued to you and your team and we solved something this time that has been bugging us forever – the fact that you can never tell what a credit card charge is on your statement! We changed the data to give you the actual merchant / vendor and a link to the website. When we did this, we also realized we could do something really unique with receipts – because we know the actual vendor / merchant, we can match any receipt sent to us via SMS or email to your transaction immediately. No need to save receipts or deal with other integrations that have a huge delay between matching a receipt to a transaction, we do it in real time. Interestingly, from a technical standpoint, we did all this in Elixir. We thought it would be a good choice (and so far we are happy with our decision) because of the distributed nature of the systems that we built and we could rely on the Erlang VM to provide that infrastructure out-of-the-box. Our domain knowledge from Pagar.me allowed us to anticipate the system boundaries and therefore we could build our backend as a distributed system from day one. Another unusual feature about the Brex launch is that we are launching relatively late in our history and with a pretty significant amount of capital from our Series B. We launched the business at YC, but based on our background with Pagar.me and that we were focused on payments again, we raised a ~$7M seed round in Spring 2017. That round was led by Ribbit Capital – which we liked given our connection to Micky there and their expertise in Fintech. YC Continuity led our Series B. In both rounds, for us, it’s all about the relationship with the partner and firm, and we have been huge beneficiaries of the YC ecosystem. On a personal note, for us the non-personal guarantee aspect of our product is most salient. As I mentioned, we are foreign entrepreneurs who don’t have access to banking products in the U.S. It was demoralizing to come to the U.S. after being successful in Brazil and not be able to get a card – especially given how much activity, particularly online, requires a credit card. Personal guarantees mean an entrepreneur who has already taken a ton of risk has to further put their personal financials on the line, which even if the company pays on time, can hurt his or her credit. One aspect of the product that we’d love HN feedback on is the signup flow. We gathered great feedback from our beta, and we waited to launch until we had an instant signup product. In financial services, signup flows have meaningfully more constraints than do many consumer signup flows – particularly compared to those with freemium models. For example, we need to collect business information to comply with regulations around anti-money laundering and Know Your Customer standards, as well as ensure the customer’s ability to pay and set up autopay. These constraints mean not only a longer signup flow, but also one that integrates many third party vendors to do compliance, fraud and credit checks. The more integrations and data to handle, the more edge cases we need to be able to support seamlessly. It took a ton of engineering effort to get here, plus a lot of time enhancing our compliance processes and credit framework. In light of those constraints, we’re specifically looking for user feedback on whether or not the flow feels logical, intuitive and simple – and if there are adjustments to the order, text or design that could improve the UI. But we're interested to hear any of your ideas and experiences and discuss the Fintech space generally too. Thanks for taking the time to read this, we’re really happy to be posting here :) Henrique and Pedro

We have been building a DeepSpeech model with our data for the past year and we have recently hit 95% accuracy on the LibriSpeech dataset. That puts us close to the published results for DeepSpeech 2. However our dataset is conversational audio and we do much better with our own internal dataset compared to PaddlePaddle. Here's a blog post on the method we followed to build our models. https://ift.tt/2N5qCNK... We have been using this internally in our service and it saves a ton of time and effort during the typing stage. It is nowhere near to the accuracy which our transcribers can achieve, but we are getting close. We are offering automated transcripts free for a limited time. Please do try it out. https://ift.tt/2yCZLpi Thanks in advance!

Sweden cruise to victory over Mexico as both qualify for World Cup last 16

Devastated on the pitch, trailing 3-0 after a performance riddled with anxiety and inhibition, with the minutes ticking down on Mexico’s World Cup Javier Hernández did the only thing that mattered in the circumstances. He pelted over to the touchline and asked his bench the burning question. What the hell is the score of Germany v South Korea? At that point it was 0-0; there was still hope.

This was one of these extraordinary events where emotions were stretched to the fraying edges of reason. In stoppage time in Ekaterinburg the mood turned into a twisted kind of pandemonium – first a charge cascading around the crowd to signal news of a goal for South Korea. But then the celebrations shrank with reports of a raised flag. A second wave of euphoria came moments later as a referee in front of a television monitor nearly 1,000km away in Kazan made his fateful decision.

Defeating England is not a priority for Belgium, says Roberto Martínez

• Belgium manager strikes different tone to Gareth Southgate
• Unprofessional to put players on yellow cards at risk, he adds

Roberto Martínez struck a different tone to Gareth Southgate by claiming winning their final group game against England is not a priority and insisting protecting his players from injury and suspension was of greater importance.

With passage to the knockout stage assured for both teams, the Belgium manager could make as many as 10 changes to the side who comfortably defeated Tunisia. Martínez confirmed Romelu Lukaku, who has scored four goals in the tournament, will miss the match with an ankle injury, but he is also set to rest other key personnel.

Ecstatic Mexico fans mob South Korean embassy after Germany upset

  • Fans gather at embassy in Mexico City after South Korea win
  • Supporters chant: ‘Korean, brother, now you’re Mexican!’

Hundreds of Mexican soccer fans descended on the South Korean embassy in Mexico City on Wednesday to celebrate the Asian country’s improbable World Cup win over Germany, which ensured Mexico’s place in the knockout stages despite El Tri’s defeat to Sweden.

As Mexico fell behind 3-0 during the second half of Wednesday’s group-stage finale, it became clear they would need South Korea to hold off the reigning champions, who so rarely falter at the World Cup, in order to finish in the top two and advance. But the German goal felt so inevitable for 90 minutes never came and their joy were consummated when Kim Young-gwon and Son Heung-min broke through with goals in stoppage time, sealing the shock 2-0 result that eliminated the four-time champions, who had gone eight decades since last failing to make it out of the first round at a World Cup.

Thomas Vermaelen: anglophile with high hopes for Belgium – and England

The Belgium defender with an English wife says both teams are capable of winning the World Cup and sees similarities between Hazard and Messi

Diego Maradona stood there in a black shirt, black suit, two watches, one on each wrist, and a yellow bow tie, holding up a piece of paper that said “England” on it. That meant they were going into Group G with Belgium; it also meant that, sitting watching the draw at home, Thomas Vermaelen had an awkward question for his English wife, Polly Parsons. “I asked her straightaway who she was supporting,” he says. And? “And, of course, she gave a good answer,” he adds, smiling and moving on quickly.

On Thursday they meet in Kaliningrad. “It’s a nice game for us and I think England is very interesting,” Vermaelen says. “I know in England you’re usually all very negative about your national team but I think now with the qualities you have – young, talented players – it’s not going to be easy for us. You have a very good side.”

‘It was win or die’: Argentina savour their great World Cup escape

Relief was the overriding emotion in the Argentina camp after the dramatic win over Nigeria ended a week of torment and set up a last-16 match with France

Javier Mascherano was bloodied but not beaten, the last to depart the stadium in St Petersburg where outside it would soon be getting light, a plaster over the cut on the side of his head. “You have to know how to suffer,” he said. He had suffered, all right; they all had.

Lionel Messi admitted he had never experienced anything like it – for the moment, what was at stake, everything Argentina had been through since the disastrous defeat by Croatia, the dramatic days they had lived. Asked if he had ever suffered so much, Jorge Sampaoli, the manager, simply said: “No.” But at the end Marcos Rojo appeared and scored the goal against Nigeria that took them through. “As if it was written,” in Gonzalo Higuaín’s words.

No more years of hurt? Why Three Lions is in vogue again for England | Paul MacInnes

A blend of nostalgia and the new spirit surrounding England’s World Cup campaign has made Baddiel and Skinner’s hit ubiquitous once more

It’s coming home. Three simple words but yet so much more. Twenty-two years after it was first written, the refrain to Three Lions is once again being sung lustily. You can hear it from the stadiums in Russia whenever England are playing, or at home in pubs and those weird human pens they call “fan zones”. It is being shared between people as a greeting, daubed in dust on the back of white vans, posted in group chats and, naturally, turned into a meme. It’s back and it’s everywhere, but why?

When David Baddiel and Frank Skinner, of the TV show Fantasy Football, sat down with Ian Broudie of the Lightning Seeds to record a song for Euro 96, they were indulging in an act of guerrilla marketing. The official theme song was “We’re in this Together” by Simply Red. But despite boasting Alan Shearer in the video and Hugh Masekela on guest vocals (the song had a distinctly Afro-pop vibe), Mick Hucknall’s effort only reached No 11 in the charts.

What does Didier Deschamps want from his France team? If only he knew

Nabil Fékir and Steven N’Zonzi may be shoehorned into the team for the Argentina match but France need some clear direction if they are to impress at this World Cup

By Adam White for Get French Football News

France and Denmark emphatically ended a streak of 36 matches without a goalless draw at Russia 2018. Their 90-minute standoff in Moscow took both sides through to the last-16 but it represented something of a nadir for this World Cup, with France somehow managing to double down on their slow, turgid opening to the tournament. The game also posed further selection questions for Didier Deschamps as he attempts to wrestle some form from his supremely talented yet cripplingly uninspired squad. Most notably: what should he do with Nabil Fékir, the only player who posed a consistent threat against Denmark.

With France already assured of a place in the last-16, Deschamps made some changes for the Denmark game. Steve Mandanda replaced the rested Hugo Lloris in goal; Djibril Sidibé and Presnel Kimpembe played in defence; Steven N’Zonzi took Paul Pogba’s place in midfield; and Thomas Lemar and Ousmane Dembélé played out wide in place of Blaise Matuidi and Kylian Mbappé. The tired and trusted 4-4-2 remained.

England’s unknown unknowns leave us clueless about their World Cup trajectory | Marina Hyde

I don’t know what is happening, but … I think I like it? I certainly like the fact that most England fans’ joy cheerfully acknowledges that it’ll probably go tits-up any minute

Nobody knows anything, runs William Goldman’s famous line about Hollywood. Part of its appeal is the sheer range of trades to which it could be applied. Many people get up and go to work every day in places they regard as almost comically clueless and dysfunctional – and some of them may not even be journalists.

Nobody knows anything. One of Alex Ferguson’s best lines is so memorable because it acknowledges the decisive part of chaos in one of his most artfully strategised campaigns. “Football, bloody hell …”

The worst-performing World Cup teams to get out of their groups | The Knowledge

Plus: England debutants at major tournaments and why the name isn’t always on the back of the shirt. Mail us here or tweet @TheKnowledge_GU

“Mexico, Sweden or Germany could go out of the tournament despite winning two of their group games,” notes Paul Blandon. “Has this ever happened before? And on the flip side, what are the worst-performing teams to get out of their group?”

Only one team has been eliminated after finishing third despite winning two of their group games: Algeria, whose loveable 1982 team were stitched up by West Germany and Austria. But this question is muddied slightly by the fact that, from 1986 to 1994, the four best third-placed teams also qualified for the last 16. Had only the top two teams in each group gone through, both Argentina and Belgium would have been eliminated in 1994 despite winning two of their three matches.

When Italy players did national service – at the Military World Cup

Gianluca Vialli won the Military World Cup in 1987 while on national service – unlike Alessandro Del Piero and Fabio Cannavaro, who were sent off in a defeat to Cyprus in 1995

By Ricci Potts for The Gentleman Ultra

There is an odd tendency to conflate football with the military. From England fans’ habit of singing songs about the second world war to the seemingly never-ending poppy controversies, there is an idea that football teams are a division of the armed forces. War minus the shooting, as George Orwell put it. Soldiers and footballers are often painted as opposites: soldiers are disciplined, humble and self-sacrificing, while football players are vain, spoiled prima donnas. The idea seems to be that footballers might do a lot better if they were more like soldiers. In fact, some of the best footballers of the last generation have been soldiers.

In Italy, compulsory national service remains on the statute books, although it was gradually reduced in duration from the 1970s onwards and was ultimately suspended completely in 2004. This meant that players such as Paolo Maldini and Roberto Mancini, by then both regular starters in Serie A and for the national team, were obliged to serve a 12-month term in Italy’s armed forces.

German fans react as champions are knocked out of World Cup – video

Defending world champions Germany crashed out of the World Cup after a shock 2-0 loss to South Korea on Wednesday, leaving fans tearful in the stands and fan zones. South Korea’s Kim Young-gwon scored in added time and Son Heung-min added another goal just before the final whistle. The four-time winners, who had not been eliminated in a World Cup first round since 1938, were a shadow of their once dominant selves, managing only two goals in their three group games
