Fragile mood blights West Ham’s first return since ugly crowd scenes | Jacob Steinberg
A toxic atmosphere at the London Stadium has led to heightened security for Saturday’s relegation match against Southampton
In different circumstances it would be possible simply to look forward to a day of huge significance at the bottom of the Premier League. If life at the London Stadium was that straightforward, however, they would not be fortifying security in front of the directors’ box and there would be no clamour for the trio running West Ham United to stay away from home games for the rest of the season.
The future has arrived in less than glorious circumstances, humbling West Ham as they prepare to host Southampton on Saturday afternoon. The promised dream has turned into a nightmare in a soulless bowl. It has been three weeks since West Ham’s last game descended into chaos and it is hardly ideal they have spent that time working with the authorities to prevent a repeat of the ugly scenes that marred their 3-0 defeat against Burnley.

Ray Wilkins in an induced coma after suffering a cardiac arrest and fall
• Wife Jackie: ‘He’s critically ill. The cardiac arrest led to a fall’
Ray Wilkins has been placed in an induced coma after suffering a cardiac arrest and a fall. The Chelsea legend and former England international was taken to St George’s Hospital in south London on Friday night with his son Ross saying it would be “touch and go whether my father will get through this”.
“He’s in hospital, he’s had a cardiac arrest and is in intensive care,” Jackie Wilkins, his wife, told the Daily Mirror. “He is not in a good state at all, I’m afraid. He’s critically ill. The cardiac arrest led to a fall which has meant he’s had to be put in an induced coma. It’s very, very bad.”

Arsenal not prepared to break the bank to keep Jack Wilshere on new contract
• Club sanguine about chances of player leaving in summer
Arsenal fear Jack Wilshere will reject their offer of a new contract and leave on a free transfer in the summer. Arsène Wenger has previously suggested the club have made him a take-it-or-leave-it offer and, at the moment, it looks as though the midfielder will do the latter. Everton, West Ham and Juventus have been linked with a move for the 26-year-old.
Arsenal have proposed a heavily incentivised deal because they are mindful of Wilshere’s terrible fitness record. He pulled out of Gareth Southgate’s England squad during the recent international break with a knee problem but the player has trained and is in contention to face Stoke at Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Jürgen Klopp says Liverpool are in good shape for series of ‘finals’ ahead
• Victory at Crystal Palace would strengthen grip on top-four place
Jürgen Klopp has said Liverpool are well-equipped and well-prepared for the series of “finals” that will define their season.
The Liverpool manager takes charge of his 100th Premier League game on Saturday at Crystal Palace where victory, coupled with a Tottenham win over Chelsea on Sunday, would establish a 10-point lead over the champions in the race for a Champions League place. Liverpool then face Manchester City in a Champions League quarter-final, either side of a Merseyside derby, and Klopp has called on his team to approach every game with an all-or-nothing mentality.

José Mourinho denies Paul Pogba’s dip is a hangover from hamstring injury
• Mourinho expects criticised Luke Shaw to stay at Old Trafford
José Mourinho denied Paul Pogba’s drop in form is a hangover from the serious hamstring injury he suffered in September, with Manchester United’s manager saying the £89m midfielder should be asked the reason why he is struggling.
Mourinho also said he expects Luke Shaw to still be at United next season, despite substituting the defender at half-time in the win over Brighton before the international break and again criticising the left-back’s display.

Nine-man Wolves beat Middlesbrough to stay six points clear at top
Rúben Neves and Matt Doherty were sent off as Wolves lost their tempers on Teesside but even the reduction to nine men failed to prevent Nuno EspÃrito Santo’s side from extending an apparently unassailable lead at the top of the Championship.
While three wins would guarantee Wolves promotion, Tony Pulis’s Middlesbrough cling to sixth place on goal difference. If they are to reach, let alone win, the play-offs, a team increasingly built around the attacking talents of Adama Traoré will need to be rather more ruthless than this. Although the largely isolated Patrick Bamford registered his ninth goal in seven games with a brilliant 94th-minute volley, it was too little too late.

Lionel Messi’s supercharged genius the ideal antidote to grey World Cup | Barney Ronay
I see a bad moon rising: I see trouble on the way. Or if not quite trouble, then some interesting times this summer for the poor old beleaguered World Cup; and indeed for Lionel Messi in what is surely a last realistic shot at the ultimate prize for the most exhilarating footballer of the modern age.
Argentina’s travelling fans are still among the most vivid memories of the last tournament in Brazil, a sweaty, gleeful, Messi-worshipping horde from across the border that in the last few days before the final seemed to be coming up through the Rio drains and falling down from the trees, emerging in ever greater numbers from the Copacabana surf.

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City must keep Raheem Sterling
• ‘Maybe other clubs are now interested because he is playing so well’
Pep Guardiola has stressed the importance of Manchester City keeping hold of Raheem Sterling after the 23-year-old impressed again for England in midweek.
It is barely a year since the winger’s future at the Etihad appeared to be in doubt, but Guardiola is aware Sterling’s transformation this season into both a goalscorer and effective attacking threat will not have gone unnoticed. The former Liverpool player is already under contract until 2020, but it is understood City will open negotiations on an improved extension at the end of the season.

Sam Allardyce backs Jordan Pickford to be England’s World Cup No 1
• Goalkeeper impressed on England duty against the Netherlands
Sam Allardyce believes Jordan Pickford has strengthened his claims to be England’s World Cup goalkeeper not only with an impressive display against the Netherlands but also with his performances throughout Everton’s difficult season.
Pickford has been one of Everton’s few transfer successes of last summer and during England’s recent 1-0 win in Amsterdam enhanced his prospects of starting for Gareth Southgate’s team in Russia next summer. The 24-year-old has conceded 50 Premier League goals in his debut season at Goodison Park but that statistic, Allardyce argues, reflects the team’s struggles in general and not the goalkeeper’s form.

Six of the best from Manchester City dominate my PFA team of the year
Kyle Walker, Nicolás Otamendi, Fernandinho, Kevin De Bruyne, Leroy Sané and Sergio Agüero selected by Brighton defender
The rattle of cutlery and cups has not been the only noise in the canteens at Premier League clubs over the last few days as players have been debating who to vote for in the PFA player of the year, young player of the year and team of the year awards. Being recognised by your peers is the ultimate accolade, mostly because it’s from those whom you’ve competed against week in, week out and that is why we take it so seriously. What's going on at West Ham? – video
West Ham United face Southampton on Saturday looking to put the ugly scenes of the match against Burnley on 10 March behind them. Poor results and the the club's transfer policy are contributing factors to the supporters' unrest. However, there are other underlying tensions between the fans and the board around the move to the London Stadium. Supporters want the stadium to feel like 'home' but at the moment say the 'real West Ham has been lost'. Crystal Palace v Liverpool: match preview
Liverpool can move 10 points clear of fifth-placed Chelsea with a win at Selhurst Park, but will be wary that the ailing champions have two games in hand and are still to host them this season. That should spur Jürgen Klopp’s side on, even with this a nuisance of a game before the more anticipated contests against Manchester City and Everton to come. Palace, with their ranks of wounded still too numerous for comfort, will hope Christian Benteke and Mamadou Sakho have points to prove against their former club. Dominic Fifield

West Bromwich Albion v Burnley: match preview
Burnley are one of only three sides to lose to West Brom in the league this season, a 1-0 win in August giving the visitors an improbable six points from six at that stage. Much has changed since and Burnley have a club-record 43 Premier League points while West Brom are 10 adrift of safety and all but relegated. “I kind of feel I owe this club,” said Alan Pardew, who has only one league win to his name since arriving at the Hawthorns in late November. “The results since I’ve been here should have been better and I’d like to come back next season with a squad that better reflects the way I play, with a bit more attacking prowess.” Burnley have won their last two games – Everton and West Ham – and with only 14 away goals conceded will be disappointed if they do not make it three in a row. Brighton & Hove Albion v Leicester City: match preview
Both sides can, to all intents and purposes, just go out and play although Leicester could conceivably wonder whether a kind-looking run of games can heave them into faint contention for sixth place. Chris Hughton does not quite see Brighton’s position that way and hopes their next two games against Huddersfield and Crystal Palace banish any lingering relegation concerns. Watford may have just about recovered from being ripped apart by Mohamed Salah before the international break. Javi Gracia will demand a response against Bournemouth, after conceding eight and failing to score in their past two matches on the road, but equally should have confidence in his side’s ability to bounce back based on their strong home record this season. Everton are the only current Premier League team Pep Guardiola has not beaten as the Manchester City manager and there cannot be greater incentive to complete the set than the prize on the horizon that would follow a victory at Goodison Park. Three points will offer City the priceless opportunity of winning the Premier League title at home to Manchester United next weekend. It is an opportunity not to be wasted, although Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final at Liverpool may influence Guardiola’s selection. Premier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend
José Mourinho could have Portuguese problem, Nathaniel Clyne might make return and will Arsenal rest their best?
Poor José Mourinho! Once he was king but now he cannot even claim to be the Premier’s League best Portuguese manager. Carlos Carvalhal certainly has a stronger case for that accolade at the moment. It is hard to imagine that any other manager could have turned Swansea around as impressively as he has done since taking over in late December, when the Welsh club seemed doomed. Now they are out of the relegation zone and within reach of survival. Even Mourinho must admire the solidity that Carvalhal has introduced to Swansea, who will not give up chances easily at Old Trafford. Paul Pogba performed well for France in Tuesday’s victory in Russia but will he be restored to the starting lineup for United? PD

Tottenham’s quiet evolution slowly nears endgame under Pochettino
A win at Chelsea would go a long way to shutting next season’s Champions League door on London’s hitherto top club
On 24 February 2008 Tottenham came from behind to beat Chelsea 2-1 in the League Cup final. Since then, they have sacked Juande Ramos, enjoyed a period of Gareth Bale-driven excitement under Harry Redknapp, taken significant missteps with André Villas-Boas and Tim Sherwood, and then found in Mauricio Pochettino a bright young manager under whom they have made progress in each of the past four seasons. But in that decade, they have won nothing.

Riches of Champions League quarter-finals overshadow old European Cup | Paul Wilson
With Real Madrid facing Juventus and Manchester City taking on Liverpool, there is hardly a weak link in the last eight in a way the old competition rarely achieved
Few are likely to complain about Uefa abandoning the principle of players moving between Champions League clubs in January being cup‑tied for the rest of the season – the transfer window itself already does quite a good job of keeping the leading contenders honest – though it was interesting to read in the small print the justification for the change.

Mick McCarthy and Ipswich call it a day – to the relief of all concerned
Mick McCarthy does not waste much time on sentiment but football’s circularity will not be lost on him when he emerges from the tunnel at Birmingham on Saturday. It was at St Andrew’s, on 3 November 2012, that he took the first small step towards creating a team Ipswich could feel proud of again; now his long goodbye begins there and the overriding sense, beyond the wildly contrasting opinions McCarthy’s reign has prompted, is of relief at the end of a saga that did all parties more harm than good.
As this season progressed and McCarthy moved closer to the end of his contract, which the club confirmed on Thursday would not be extended beyond this campaign, there was tacit acceptance the writing was on the wall. Ipswich began making inquiries about potential successors last autumn, both as standard contingency and in the knowledge their manager’s standing among supporters had nosedived.

Mauricio Pochettino believes Dele Alli needs to be helped, not booed
• Spurs manager says treatment of 21-year-old is unfair

Mauricio Pochettino has urged supporters of rival Premier League clubs to get off Dele Alli’s back for the common good of the England team. The Tottenham manager has noted the treatment Alli has come in for at away stadiums – largely because of his reputation for diving – and he wants the critics to remember that the player is 21.
Pochettino is preparing for Sunday’s visit to Chelsea and he reported there was the small possibility Harry Kane would return to his squad following ankle ligament damage. He added Alli was fit after the slight groin problem that held him back during the international break.

When extra time had no end: how one match lasted 3hrs and 23mins
With replays unwanted during the second world war a Play to the Finish rule came in. But, 72 years ago this week, exhausted Stockport and Doncaster players were halted only by darkness
During the second world war competitive football continued in an irregular, somewhat confused manner, organisation being considerably more difficult when every able-bodied man of fighting – and therefore playing – age was in the armed forces or, at the very least, full-time employment. All unnecessary complications were avoided; tournaments were played regionally and quickly.
In 1940 West Ham won the Football League War Cup, a tournament of some 137 games played in the space of only nine weeks. But replays, officials decided, had complicated matters unnecessarily. The following year drawn ties were awarded to the team with the superior league record, but this too caused unhappiness.

True, the high-water mark of his playing career as a willowy, crowd-pleasing left winger – a man-of-the-match performance for Blackburn Rovers in the 1960 FA Cup final described as “magnificent” by this paper – earned him nothing more than personal plaudits and a runners-up medal after a comprehensive 3-0 defeat by Wolverhampton Wanderers. But there were notable achievements when he hung up his boots and clambered into the dugout. First, a couple of promotions with Ayr United, a club he very nearly took into Europe in the early 1970s. Then tangible success at last: a Scottish League Cup with Aberdeen in 1976, the club’s first triumph in the competition for two decades and only their second major trophy in an otherwise barren 20-year stretch. Dons’ supporters who still singing hosannas to Derek McInnes will know how good a League Cup can make you feel.

Greek club president banned for three years after gun incident on pitch
• Club out of title race after being stripped of three points
The PAOK Salonika president, Ivan Savvidis, have been banned from football stadiums for three years for storming on to the pitch with a gun in his waistband during a domestic game. The Greek league also stripped the club of three points, effectively ending their title chances.
Savvides, a Georgia-born businessman and former Russian state duma deputy, invaded the pitch when a goal for PAOK was disallowed against title contenders AEK Athens on 11 March.

Classic YouTube: Ball tampering, Lee Dixon and Easter bunnies
This week’s roundup also features a cricketer failing to learn the aim of golf and Wayne Bridge being charitable with his fists
1) The Australians are not the first team to tamper with the ball; there is a long, rich history of it in cricket. There was Michael Atherton’s dirt-rubbing episode at Lord’s in 1994 during a Test against South Africa. Then in 2001, Sachin Tendulkar was at the centre of a furore around his dealing with the seam, which resulted in an international incident. Shahid Afridi was banned for two matches are he was caught biting the ball, although this was not due to the glorious taste of worn leather. In other cricket news: Haseeb Hameed not a golfer .

Cost to fill Panini World Cup sticker book is £773, says maths prof
But Paul Harper calculates that swapping duplicates with friends will reduce cost to about £250
A maths professor from Cardiff has calculated that filling this year’s World Cup sticker book will cost collectors £773.60. Prof Paul Harper has devised a formula that suggests, given the probabilities of getting duplicate stickers, on average an individual would need to buy 967 packets or 4,832 stickers to get the set.
As well as pictures of the 32 squads of players competing in Russia this summer, there are special stickers for national badges, team group shots and host city posters, making a total of 682 stickers needed to fill the book.

From Ederson to Firmino: Premier League team of the season so far | Sachin Nakrani
Hard to believe but the Premier League season is almost over. Where has the time gone? Feels like only yesterday José Mourinho was happy.
Anyway, with the home stretch in sight, I’ve picked a Premier League XI of the season so far. My choices are sure to cause shock, horror and outrage but before the frothing commences let me make something clear: the team below are not made up of the 11 best players in their respective positions. Some are but others are players who have performed notably above expectation – individually or within a partnership/unit – and therefore are worthy of recognition. This also means there is a whacking great omission, one bordering on a national scandal, but I don’t care – I stand by my choices.

Paul Pogba was colossal for France but they need to sort out their defence
Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappé shone against Russia but France should forget about winning the World Cup with this defence
By Eric Devin for Get French Football News
Paul Pogba’s ferocious performance against an admittedly poor Russia team on Tuesday was something to behold. He was dropped for the 3-2 defeat to Colombia last Friday and has been out of favour at Manchester United lately, but the midfielder was a force of nature in the 3-1 win against the World Cup hosts. After setting up Kylian Mbappé for the opener with an eye-of-the-needle pass, he made what had been a somewhat uneven match his own early in the second half, winning a free-kick and scoring from it.
Even if Andrey Lunyov and Roman Neustadter were more than obliging in both instances, Pogba offered a firm rebuttal to his critics, showing just how decisive he can be. Mbappé, too, was superb, as he had been against Colombia. However, as sparkling as the pair were, France’s two friendlies raised more questions than answers, particularly for their defence.

Gareth Southgate tells Dele Alli he is not a shoo-in to start for England
• Southgate says he will be spoilt for choice in attacking positions
Gareth Southgate has warned Dele Alli it will not be easy to win back his position in the England team because of the competition for places before the World Cup. The Tottenham player featured for only 22 minutes of the past two friendlies.
Southgate intends to select his preliminary squad on 14 May, the day after the Premier League season ends, and confirmed that he was nearing a final decision regarding the strikers and attacking midfielders. Alli is assured of a place, injuries permitting, but the manager has slightly modified his system in the past two games and the player did not get off the bench in the 1-1 draw against Italy on Tuesday.

The QC leading the Football Association’s independent inquiry into child sexual abuse in football is prepared to launch his own investigation into clubs at the centre of the scandal if he finds that they did not respond adequately to his request for information.
Clive Sheldon QC has given some of the dozen clubs thought to be the main focus of his review a month to produce a ‘structured report’ detailing how they reacted to allegations of abuse suffered by former players between 1970 and 2005.

Ramshackle Argentina show they need Lionel Messi more than ever | Marcela Mora y Araujo
What was meant to be a chance for Argentina to consolidate their idea of the game, to try different relationships on the field, to develop connectivity and strengthen the identity they have been seeking, ended in a historic defeat, described in turns as a suicide and a nightmare, compared to boxing for the metaphorical punches involved and tennis for the scoreline.
A 6-1 hammering by Spain left the 27 Argentinians who had been called up to test their ability to blend with Lionel Messi sad – desolate even – and their lyrical manager, Jorge Sampaoli, and the rest of the world none the wiser, given Messi did not play in Madrid or in the win against Italy four days earlier.

World Cup power rankings: Spain back at the top
Most World Cup teams played two games over the recent international break and here we assess how all of them fared
An exhilarating week’s football from Spain has set down a marker. They could have won what was, for an hour, an excellent match in Germany and then obliterated a shoddy Argentina with a cocktail of intense pressing and clinical finishing. These were full-throttle performances of the kind Spain have not always managed in recent years; Andrés Iniesta was on sublime form but the sheer depth Julen Lopetegui can call upon was ominously evident in both games.

Tunisia’s Wahbi Khazri could be ‘wound up’ in World Cup against England
• England’s first World Cup game is against Tunisia
The player on the receiving end of an attempted kick by Wahbi Khazri during the hot-blooded friendly between Tunisia and Costa Rica on Tuesday says that England are sure to have noted Khazri’s fiery temper and will try to lure the striker into getting himself sent off in their opening game at the World Cup.
Khazri was fortunate to escape with a yellow card after lashing out with a foot at Costa Rica’s Kendall Waston as retaliation for a series of rugged tackles by the Central American team. He went on to score the only goal but Waston says England will have been pleased by confirmation that Khazri can be provoked into acts that could lead to his dismissal.

Toby Alderweireld has been warned by Roberto MartÃnez that his place in the Belgium side at the World Cup will be under threat if he remains out of favour at Tottenham Hotspur.

Gareth Southgate reaches a defining question: To Dele or not to Dele?|Barney Ronay
Fail again. Fail better. Fail, at the very least, in a slightly more interesting way. As England’s final friendly eliminators fade from the memory, the forthcoming debate – and it is coming: you can hear it on the wind – over whether Dele Alli merits a place in the starting XI looks set to become one of the main irresolvable discussion points of the run-up to the World Cup.
And not just because all England generations must have their irresolvable discussion points. This is an interesting debate in its own right, a question of talent and form but also of the kind of patterns Gareth Southgate wants his team to adopt in and out of possession.

International football: talking points from the latest friendlies
Argentina are in a mess, England should go for all-out attack and Kylian Mbappé’s heroics are papering over French cracks
Before this game, Jorge Sampaoli had said that when it comes to the World Cup, Lionel Messi has a revolver pressed against his head. Far from removing it, on Tuesday night the Argentina manager and the rest of the team loaded it and took the safety off. Messi watched his team get taken to bits without him and it made for painful viewing, the pressure building: he didn’t even make it to the end, getting up and leaving before the final whistle. It may feel reductionist to make it all about Messi but it is unavoidable, not least because his manager does the same. There was something sad, almost needy, about the way Sampaoli insisted afterwards that Messi had shown his commitment by being with the team before the game, after the game and at half-time. It is during the game that they need him. Sid Lowe

Mark Hughes needs Charlie Austin fit and firing to save Southampton
Southampton will leapfrog West Ham and escape the bottom three if they win their first league game under Mark Hughes
By Martin Laurence for WhoScored, part of the Sport Network
Chelsea and Tottenham meet in a London derby on Sunday to battle it out for fourth place place and the capital also hosts the big relegation clash of the weekend on Saturday, when Southampton travel to West Ham. The two sides sit either side of the dreaded dotted line, with Saints able to leapfrog their opponents and escape the relegation zone if they pick up all three points.
This game is about more than points though. It is also West Ham’s first match since fans invaded the pitch to protest during their 3-0 defeat to Burnley – and it is Mark Hughes’ first league game in charge of Southampton. Hughes, now in charge of his sixth Premier League club, may be pleased he can follow up Southampton’s 2-0 win at Wigan in the FA Cup quarter-finals with an away game. The atmosphere at the London Stadium is likely to turn sour very quickly if West Ham make a poor start – and Southampton have been woeful at St Mary’s of late, failing to win any of their last eight home fixtures in the league – their worst winless streak at home in Premier League history.

Christian Ribeiro: ‘I was told to stop or I wouldn’t be walking in my 30s’

Christian Ribeiro remembers the phone call from the Oxford United physiotherapist as he navigated the snaking country lanes back towards the city. He describes the surreal moment, the rattle of his ringtone and the conversation during which Andrew Proctor relayed the message from the consultant that ended Ribeiro’s career at the age of 27.
“Before he had even said it, I knew what he was going to say because the things he was listing off were serious, they were not little niggles, these were serious problems,” Ribeiro says of his knee injury.
