I run a one-person company in the cloud / ops space and over the past year have gone from $0 to $200k in annual recurring revenue. I have not taken any funding. The major cloud providers (aws, google, azure) are starting to expand to my product space, however, and I'm increasing concerned with my long-term prospects. I think it might make sense to pursue acquisition/aqui-hire, while my product and expertise can still add value to these cloud providers. I would really appreciate advice from the HN community on how to achieve the best possible outcome, including how to proactively pursue acquisition/aqui-hire at a large company. Thanks!

Rejuvenated Daniel Sturridge eager to revive his Liverpool career

• Striker is celebrating his fourth pre-season goal
• ‘We can do something special, so we are pushing ourselves’

Daniel Sturridge has said he still has the hunger to achieve “something special” with Liverpool having played his way back into Jürgen Klopp’s plans with an impressive pre-season.

The striker scored his fourth goal of the month in the 4-1 defeat of Manchester United at the University of Michigan Stadium on Saturday, linking well with the new signing Xherdan Shaqiri and once again looking sharp as a second‑half substitute.

Cryptocurrency and football: the future or too volatile to be trusted?

A team in Gibraltar will pay players in cryptocurrency as football delves into the innovation in the financial sector

Nestled between the Rock and an airport runway, a football team are making history in Gibraltar. This time it is not the national side conceding an exorbitant number of goals (124 at the last count in four and a half years) or Lincoln Red Imps beating Celtic in the Champions League. It did not even happen on the artificial pitch of the iconic national ground, Victoria Stadium. Instead, Premier Division Gibraltar United have crept into the spotlight by becoming the world’s first football team to introduce cryptocurrency.

Through their owner, Pablo Dana, an investor in the cryptocurrency Quantocoin, the club started a sponsorship partnership. Dana says all player contracts will include payment agreements in cryptocurrency by next season.

Glasgow City’s Leanne Ross: ‘The girls now deserve to be paid’

The midfielder, who scored her 250th goal for City last month, says the game has changed ‘night and day’ since she was young

There is barely a more credible witness to evolution and revolution within Scottish women’s football than Leanne Ross, the Glasgow City player who created history last month when she scored her 250th goal for the club. The 37-year-old modestly describes her journey from itinerant teenager to the forefront of the Scottish club scene [as well as an appearance at the European Championships], as something of a fluke. Ross emerged from an era in which chances for emerging players ranged between little-known and nonexistent.

Matildas suffer late heartbreak as USA salvage Tournament of Nations draw

Xherdan Shaqiri stuns Manchester United as Liverpool ease to win

• Manchester United 1-4 Liverpool
• Pereira 31; Mané 28, Sturridge 66; Ojo 74pen, Shaqiri 82

The contented one versus the disgruntled one was an accurate billing for the latest instalment of English football’s fiercest rivalry given the pre-match moods of Jürgen Klopp and José Mourinho respectively. It was certainly fitting afterwards as Manchester United were comprehensively beaten by Liverpool on the latest leg of their US pre-season tour.

Xherdan Shaqiri marked his first appearance for Liverpool with a stunning overhead kick and also set up Daniel Sturridge for a cool finish, while penalties from Sadio Mané and Sheyi Ojo added to Mourinho’s problems in the International Champions Cup.

West Ham’s Felipe Anderson: ‘I’m fast and I’m going to use my intelligence’ | Paul MacInnes

The Hammers’ new record signing arrives from Lazio full of confidence. He doesn’t yet speak English, but is already aware who Bobby Moore is

When Manuel Pellegrini was asked about the “West Ham way” last week, his answer was straightforward: “I always like to play offensive.” The sense remains, however, that in making Felipe Anderson his marquee signing in a busy transfer window the new Hammers manager knew he was signing a crowd pleaser.

The winger arrives in east London after five years in Rome with Lazio. During that time he has had ups and downs, hot streaks and periods outside the team. But Anderson’s stats have remained consistently impressive. With real pace on the right-hand side and the technical level you would expect from a Brazilian international, he is now backing himself to deliver again in the Premier League.

Football League 2018-19: 20 things to watch out for this season | Jacob Steinberg

Will Lampard, Bielsa and Potter light up the Championship, is Barton manager material and how low can Sunderland go?

After seeing Rúben Neves help Wolves tear the Championship apart last season, Nottingham Forest have also decided to tap into the Portuguese market as they attempt to end their long absence from the top division. They have broken their transfer record to buy João Carvalho from Benfica for £13.2m and have also signed Diogo Gonçalves on loan. The arrival of the Portugal Under-21 internationals are signs of big-spending Forest’s ambition.

Mesut Özil has what it takes to be Arsenal captain, says Unai Emery

• Arsenal 5-1 Paris Saint-Germain
• Özil opens scoring in International Champions Cup rout

Unai Emery has backed Mesut Özil as a potential regular Arsenal captain after the midfielder led the side to a 5-1 victory over the new manager’s former club Paris Saint-Germain in Singapore.

Arsenal signed off the Asian leg of their International Champions Cup campaign in style, with Özil’s early goal and two second-half strikes from Alexandre Lacazette putting them in charge after Christopher Nkunku had levelled briefly from the penalty spot. There was a late fourth from Rob Holding before the 19-year-old striker Eddie Nketiah drilled in number five.

Eleven Sports: who is the new player in the battle for sport broadcast rights?

Eleven Sports has already snapped up the rights to the US PGA Championship, La Liga and Serie A in an ever-changing TV sports landscape

When the new season arrives there will be some changes to get your head around. New players, new managers, new shirts, new tactics and new haircuts. This year, there will also be a new broadcaster.

On Monday, Eleven Sports announced it will be launching in the UK on 9 August. Its opening event will be exclusive coverage of the US PGA Championship. That will be followed by both La Liga and Serie A football, pinched from under the noses of Sky Sports and BT Sports respectively. For some fans, who already pay for one or both of those services, this development will be like taking a rabbit punch to the wallet.

Jürgen Klopp laughs off Mourinho's transfer spending jibes – video

Jürgen Klopp has dismissed José Mourinho's comments about Liverpool's high spending this summer, saying: 'We're only responsible for our fans, for our owners, our supporters all over the world. Nobody else.' Klopp had previously stated he was against paying high transfer fees but changed his mind, something Mourinho poked fun at in the week. The Manchester United manager said fans ought to 'demand' that Liverpool win a trophy next season following their investments. They have been the transfer window’s biggest spenders. United and Liverpool go head-to-head in the International Champions Cup at the Michigan Stadium

Back in Europe and Burnley get to be Goliath for a change | Alastair Campbell

The lifelong fan travels to Aberdeen to celebrate the club’s return to European competition

“One-nil to the Sunday league, one-nil to the Sunday league ...” There was a period on Thursday night when Aberdeen were leading us off the pitch as well on it.

That particular piece of Aberdonian self-mockery was designed to highlight the “gulf” between the Premier Leagues of Scotland and England. A £3m wage bill was leading £61m thanks to a first-half penalty from Gary Mackay-Steven. Sam Cosgrove, a £20,000 signing from Carlisle, was leading the line for Aberdeen against internationals who earn that in a few days. If the “gulf” cliche had had a fair run-out in the buildup to this Europa League tie, so did that old favourite “Battle of Britain”, though football economics would say this was more David at home to Goliath with Burnley, a relative pauper alongside the six clubs above us in the Premier League, unused to the Goliath role.

Sombre José Mourinho looks a beaten man before the season even starts

Manchester United’s manager should be enjoying the sun but constant complaints do not augur well for the months ahead

An illustration of the pressure José Mourinho may be feeling, and the sombre mood he has been in during Manchester United’s tour of the United States, came at their UCLA training base this week.

The manager was due to sit down with a TV reporter who had travelled to Los Angeles for a pre-arranged interview on behalf of a prominent broadcaster. Yet just before it was supposed to happen, Mourinho pulled out. The journalist wandered off, only to be told the Portuguese had changed his mind again, and the interview took place.

Club forums are a haven for football fans in an ever angrier online world

Whereas YouTube and Twitter amplify rants, club forums offer kinship, humour and a place to open up to like-minded people

By Jem Stone for WSC, part of the Sport Network

Earlier this year a Brighton fan who uses the pseudonym Last Summer posted to the web forum North Stand Chat. It was one of the 50 or so new discussions started on there by a supporter every day and one of hundreds of posts he had contributed over the last decade. “Apologies for the Mumsnet-type thread,” he began as he calmly explained that he and his wife had split up after 14 years together and he was in need of advice from fellow fans. “Hurts like hell at the moment and the thought of now having to live my life without her is destroying me,” he wrote, before adding: “There’s loads of advice and stuff online that I could Google – but they ain’t Brighton.”

And he was right.
