Abdoulaye Doucouré, admired by clubs who could spend big this January, notably Paris Saint-Germain, underlined his importance to Watford by coming off the bench to rescue his team from an embarrassing defeat.
Rafael Benítez maintains that his side will need a miracle to avoid relegation this season, but they were on course for three deserved points thanks to an excellent counterattacking goal by Salomón Rondón. Then Doucouré struck with eight minutes remaining to endear himself further to Watford fans – and, no doubt, to other clubs’ scouts.
