Maurizio Sarri has risked straining his relationship with Eden Hazard by suggesting the forward is “more an individual player than a leader” and urging him to deliver more for the team as they attempt to overcome a first-leg deficit in Thursday’s Carabao Cup semi-final.
Gonzalo Higuaín will be unavailable for Thursday’s tie against Tottenham, because his loan move from Juventus was completed after midday on the eve of the match, potentially leaving Hazard to reprise a central striking role against Spurs. Yet, in the context of Sarri’s criticisms after the meek defeat at Arsenal, when he had suggested his players were “extremely difficult to motivate” and would never be known for their “battling and fighting qualities”, his comments on Hazard’s leadership attributes felt risky.
