New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: How do you decide when you've done enough work for the day?
84 by zzaip | 38 comments on Hacker News.
I'm a relatively junior software engineer, a little over a year out from university, with a cushy remote job working for big-co. And I never know how much work to do on a given day. Right now, my daily rule of thumb is to try to have my butt in the seat for ~8 hours. I clock out at 6 and stay disciplined so I don't end up overworking as many remoters do. The main disadvantage of this strategy is that it just doesn't align with the reality of the job. Some days I work on something complex and want to work more hours, while others I'll knock out a few small things and want to call it early. Strategies I'd like to use but can't: - Show up and leave with my coworkers. We're a remote team, and have a few serious workaholics on the team (not to mention the issue of timezones). - Leave when I've done my tasks. This might work if we had actual sprints. Our reality is an endless stream bugs and features for us to work on before we launch our product, and we just grab tickets as they come. Hopefully this improves after launch. What do you do? I want to do enough work to feel good about myself, without burning out. I have very little supervision from management, my coworkers seem to respect and like me, and I am generally productive. Help me, HN.

Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge hits back after Eden Hazard’s Chelsea strike
There were two minutes of normal time remaining when Daniel Sturridge – so new to the game there could not have been a scuff of grass on his kit – let fly with an elegant swish of his left boot. Liverpool had given everything to conjure up an equaliser and Sturridge struck just as it had started to seem futile. His goal was a beauty and the body language of Jürgen Klopp’s players at the final whistle made it clear they could live with giving up their immaculate run in the Premier League.
Nobody could argue, either, that it was undeserved, bearing in mind the number of chances Liverpool passed up before Sturridge deceived Kepa Arrizabalaga, the Chelsea goalkeeper, with the swerve and trajectory of his high, angled shot.

Didier Deschamps: ‘Media image of Paul Pogba doesn’t correspond to who he is‘
• France coach says midfielder central figure in his dressing room
• Pogba told he will not captain Manchester United again
Didier Deschamps has defended Paul Pogba’s leadership qualities during a week when he was told by José Mourinho that he would never captain Manchester United again.
The France manager was full of praise for the way Pogba became a central figure in the dressing room during the World Cup and a strong influence on the group. “He has taken many things upon himself. He has been a leader,” Deschamps said. “Each time he had to talk and express himself it was always very positive. It’s the words he uses and the atmosphere and feeling that comes across. He is not the only one but he is one of the leaders who took it upon himself because the group needed it. On the pitch he did what needed to be done as well.”

José Mourinho criticises players’ mentality during West Ham defeat
• ‘The first was an offside goal, the third was a referee mistake’
José Mourinho criticised the mentality and spirit of his Manchester United players, while also hitting out at the match officials after witnessing a dismal 3-1 defeat at West Ham.
The manager, already under pressure after last Saturday’s home draw with Wolves and the Carabao Cup exit against Derby, chose to talk up the personality of Scott McTominay, the 21-year-old defensive midfielder whom he drafted in on the right of a back three. Mourinho being Mourinho, it was clear that what he left unsaid about the other, more senior players was damning. “I can have complaints with quality and mental approach,” he said. “You have to try always and that is my nature as a football professional.”

Gareth Bale injured as Real and Atlético play out Madrid derby stalemate
Before this game began, Real Madrid’s players were handed the trophies they had collected at The Best gala last Monday, and there were two World Cup winners on the other side, but for all the talent on the pitch it was the men wearing gloves who decided the derby. For the sixth successive year, Atlético Madrid left the Santiago Bernabéu unbeaten in the league. Above all, Jan Oblak and Thibaut Courtois departed undefeated: in a game of few chances there were three one-on-ones, but the goalkeepers stood tall. And so a game Atlético edged in the first half and Real dominated in the second finished goalless.
This was the second successive game in which Real have failed to score – the first time that had happened in seven years – and a third may be more likely now after Gareth Bale was withdrawn at half-time. He may yet be ruled out of Real’s trip to Russia in the Champions League with tests due on Sunday, before the team travels east. “He had discomfort in his abductor muscle [in the groin] and it made sense to take him off as a precaution,” Real’s coach Julen Lopetegui said. “We will do tests tomorrow and then we’ll see what he really has.”

European roundup: Barcelona saved from loss to Bilbao by El Haddadi
• Borussia Dortmund go top in Germany with comeback win
The substitute Munir El Haddadi saved Barcelona’s blushes with a late equaliser against Athletic Bilbao as the reigning champions narrowly avoided suffering a second successive La Liga defeat.
Óscar De Marcos’s 41st-minute effort at the Camp Nou looked set to consign the Catalan giants – who lost 2-1 to Léganes in midweek – to back-to-back league defeats for the first time in over two years.

Arsenal’s Mesut Özil completes slick move to sink Watford
Caught up in the emotion of Premier League tension, as a match that hung in the balance was suddenly seized, Unai Emery leaped about and shook his fists on the sidelines. The reserve he has tended to show went out of the window. This one, compared to the winning sequence that preceded it, seemed to count that little bit more, to mean something that bit deeper.
Once Mesut Özil tapped in Arsenal’s second goal and the result swung in their favour, Emery could allow himself to wonder whether the new ideas are slowly beginning to fall into place.

Manchester City outclass Brighton with sublime Sergio Agüero finish
Manchester City’s sixth Premier League victory of the season, that helped them go top after Liverpool’s draw at Chelsea, was decorated by a superb Sergio Agüero goal. Midway through the second half, the striker traded passes with David Silva near the centre circle and slalomed towards goal with some soft-shoe shuffle skill that had him nutmegging Lewis Dunk before he found Raheem Sterling to the left. The England forward twisted and sent the ball back to the Argentinian who was never going to miss from eight yards out, scoring his fifth league goal of the campaign.
City’s fans, already buoyed by West Ham’s lunchtime victory over José Mourinho’s Manchester United , taunted their rivals delightedly with chants of: “Don’t sack Mourinho.”

Harry Maguire seals routine win for Leicester over troubled Newcastle
At the end of a day filled with tentative takeover talk and protests against Mike Ashley’s stewardship of Newcastle, Rafael BenÃtez’s limited, lacklustre side bore the wearily familiar look of strong relegation candidates.
If upwardly mobile Leicester were energised by the bright early autumn sunshine and azure blue Tyneside sky, their hosts seemed to have gone into hibernation, retreating into their shell as they remained both winless and trapped in the relegation zone.

Harry Kane scores double for Tottenham as Huddersfield stay bottom
A sylvan setting makes the John Smith’s Stadium one of the most pleasant places to spend an autumnal Saturday afternoon, and the appetite for Premier League football among proud and impassioned supporters remains undimmed. Yet with Huddersfield still bottom of the table and now going into October without a win, the script is badly in need of a change.
Tottenham were 4-0 winners in this fixture last season and the home side were lucky the scoreline had not reached similar proportions by half-time. The pattern of the game was established early on, with Huddersfield working the ball diligently around midfield without finding any real focus to their attacks, and Spurs doing exactly the opposite, keeping their defensive shape and relying on the pace of their tricky front three to make inroads when given the chance.

Gylfi Sigurdsson makes amends to fire Everton towards victory over Fulham
A £45m price tag has weighed heavily on Gylfi Sigurdsson and missing a penalty with the game goalless and the home crowd on edge could have been cue for fresh introspection. His reaction was worthy of a club-record signing, two fine finishes helping his side to their most emphatic victory of the season.
Marco Silva needed that contribution with his forwards continuing to falter, although ultimately it was Slavisa Jokanovic who had cause to lament poor finishing. Fulham were the more threatening team before half-time. Everton, easily opened and lacking creativity, were suffering for the third home game in succession. The roles reversed after the interval.

Ivan Cavaleiro’s goal sets Wolves on the way to win over Southampton
Wolves, still excited to be back in the Premier League, staged a firework display before kickoff but this game was a damp squib until Ivan Cavaleiro scored with his first touch in the 79th minute after coming on as a substitute.
The Portuguese midfielder’s celebration befitted a man making his first appearance of the campaign following a back injury and the festivities intensified when Jonny Castro Otto added a second goal to propel the promoted club up to eighth in the table.

Football League: West Brom move top as Preston stay bottom
- Gayle crowns West Brom victory at Deepdale
- Portsmouth move back top of League One
Preston remain bottom of the the table after a 3-2 home defeat to West Brom, a result which sent Albion top. Jay Rodriguez put Darren Moore’s side ahead just after the break but Andrew Hughes levelled in the 71st minute, however, moments later Preston defender Ben Davies turned the ball into his own net. Dwight Gayle looked to have sealed the win but there was still time for Alan Browne to make the score look more respectable in injury time.

Brilliant Eden Hazard sparkles to win personal duel with Mohamed Salah | Barney Ronay
Twenty minutes after the final whistle, with the sky above the stands fading to a deep pinky-blue, the Liverpool fans were still singing. This was an excellent game with elements of cheer for both teams in a 1-1 draw – and indeed for Manchester City, too, who saw both their main title rivals gouge a piece out of each other at Stamford Bridge.
For Liverpool’s supporters, there was a little extra feeling in taking a well-deserved point through Daniel Sturridge’s brilliant late equaliser. There are two elements to this. Most obviously, Liverpool drew at Chelsea despite Mo Salah seeming once again to have his gears misaligned, haring around the Stamford Bridge pitch like a soap box cart with a wonky wheel.

Peter Kenyon makes first moves in plan to launch Newcastle takeover
• Kenyon attempting to form consortium capable of buying club
Peter Kenyon is attempting to form a consortium capable of buying Newcastle from Mike Ashley. The former Manchester United and Chelsea chief executive is now a director of Opto Advisers, a sports consultancy business, and is believed to have held outline preliminary talks with Ashley.
Although Kenyon is reported to be negotiating with, among others, the New York company Rockefeller Management, things are at an extremely early stage. Moreover, the football club takeovers that do go through tend to be handled extremely discreetly, with Abu Dhabi’s deal to purchase Manchester City perhaps the best example. When takeover stories are leaked, as details of Kenyon’s bid have been, it is often either an attempt to smoke out interested investors or a highly effective way of generating publicity.

Chelsea rediscover energy and optimism under Maurizio Sarri | Dominic Fifield
Italian head coach has overseen eye-catching start – and with Eden Hazard in the form of his life positivity abounds at Stamford Bridge
Almost 11 weeks into his stint in charge, Maurizio Sarri is still stumped. The Italian would appear to have overseen an eye-catching start. Chelsea nestle third in the table behind two more fancied teams, and inflicted a first wound of the season upon the leaders, Liverpool, in the Carabao Cup before Saturday’s collision between the sides at Stamford Bridge. The smoothness of the tactical transition has surprised the head coach and rival managers, while Eden Hazard is playing with the vim and vigour that propelled them to the title in 2015 and 2017.
The Belgian is in the form of his life and positivity abounds, with the atmosphere a throwback to the energy and optimism that fuelled those last two successful pursuits of the Premier League. And yet, with those triumphs in mind, Sarri is perplexed as to why he is even in situ. “The history of this club is a little bit strange,” he said. “In 2014-15, [they reached] 87 points, then 50 points in 2015-16 with the same coach and the same group.

Liverpool’s Alisson: ‘My saves are not to show off for the camera’
Liverpool’s £65m goalkeeper goes up against Chelsea’s £71.6m Kepa Arrizabalaga on Saturday but the Brazilian is not bothered about his price tag and happy with his move to Anfield
Absurd and crazy are the words Alisson chooses to describe his £65m transfer fee. In the end the Brazilian was the most expensive goalkeeper on the planet for all of 20 days before Chelsea invested an extra £6.6m in Kepa Arrizabalaga, ensuring there will be £136.6m worth of talent between the posts at Stamford Bridge when the title contenders renew hostilities on Saturday. Alisson’s description of his price tag does not reflect unease, however. As the younger brother of a professional goalkeeper, the son of parents who kept goal for the works football team and the school handball team and the great-grandson of an amateur league goalkeeper in his hometown of Novo Hamburgo, there is satisfaction at what this summer’s transfer market symbolises for his trade. It is the price of turning hope into expectation at Liverpool.
“When I went up from the youth team to the first team at Internacional it was a risk – they were almost betting on me making it,” says Alisson, who gives long, considered answers to every question he faces in an executive lounge at Anfield. “Similarly when I went to Roma from Brazil there was an element of risk in that move too but when Liverpool signed me there was a lot more certainty about it. I appreciate some people think that it’s a crazy, absurd amount of money, I understand that, but what is more important for me is the expectation that is placed on me. I’m coming off the best season I’ve ever had and I’m hoping to do even better this season. During that period I was the most expensive goalkeeper in the world and that was quickly followed by Chelsea signing Kepa. I’m calm about it. I’ve always worked really hard and I’ll continue working the same way whatever the size of the transfer fee.

Hertha Berlin level with Bayern Munich at top of Bundesliga after stunning win
Bayern Munich crashed to their first Bundesliga defeat under their new manager, Niko Kovac, as they were beaten 2-0 by Hertha Berlin at the Olympiastadion. First-half goals by Vedad Ibisevic and Ondrej Duda stunned the league leaders as Hertha held off a second-half fightback to move level on points with their opponents.
Bayern, unbeaten in the last 14 games against their hosts, looked to settle quickly but Hertha made a brighter start when Salomon Kalou and Ibisevic combined well before Jérôme Boateng cleared the danger.

Arsenal can still see best of Aaron Ramsey this season, says Unai Emery
• Midfielder looks set to leave in 2019 after contract talks ended
• Emery: ‘I don’t think the situation will affect his performances’
Unai Emery is confident Aaron Ramsey’s performance levels will not be affected by the breakdown of his contract talks. The Wales midfielder has been at the Emirates for 10 years and appeared to be close to reaching an agreement on a new four-year deal only for the club to walk away from the negotiating table.
The suspicion has been that they do not want to push the boat out for Ramsey, whose current contract expires next summer, because they have other options in central midfield.

Superb individual goals from Adam Reach and Mateusz Klich either side of the interval ensured the spoils were shared at Hillsborough. The result means Leeds edge a point ahead of Middlesbrough at the top of the Championship table while Wednesday remain unbeaten at home in the league this season.
Wednesday’s team showed two changes with Fernando Forestieri and Jordan Thorniley replacing Marco Matias and Daniel Pudil. The Leeds head coach, Marcelo Bielsa, named an unchanged starting line-up. Forestieri had an early appeal for a penalty turned down after going down under a challenge from Pontus Jansson.

‘No panic’ at Newcastle despite winless league start, says Federico Fernández
• Fernández happy working under Rafa BenÃtez again
Federico Fernández is adamant Newcastle are not the new Swansea and there is no cause for panic at St James’ Park. The Argentinian central defender disagrees with suggestions he has swapped last season’s relegation battle in south Wales for a similar skirmish on Tyneside, maintaining it is far too early to make such comparisons.
With Swansea in the Championship, Fernández headed north for an August reunion with his former Napoli manager Rafael BenÃtez. His form alongside Jamaal Lascelles has been solid but, collectively, Newcastle have struggled and could do with securing their first win of the season, at home to Leicester on Saturday.

Mourinho picks Pogba but warns no one is bigger than Manchester United
• United need ‘players with personality’ says manager
José Mourinho has said Paul Pogba will start Manchester United’s game at West Ham United but added a warning that “no player is bigger” than the club.
United’s manager said Pogba deserved selection after training well since being stripped of the vice-captaincy. Pogba was informed by Mourinho on Tuesday that he would not wear the armband again and the following morning the pair were involved in a training-ground incident regarding the midfielder’s posting of an Instagram story. Mourinho was concerned that the video featuring Pogba laughing might have come after the Carabao Cup defeat by Derby County.

City’s manager denied there was any disciplinary problem with Mendy but said: “He arrived late, and that shouldn’t happen but it does sometimes. He should be here on time and he knows it. I spoke with him but it is not a problem with his physical condition. I expect him back when he’s fit, which should be quite soon.”

Jürgen Klopp: Liverpool will not curb attacking instincts to stop Eden Hazard
• Manager hopeful Virgil van Dijk will be fit for Saturday’s game
Jürgen Klopp has said he will not compromise Liverpool’s attacking instincts in order to prevent Eden Hazard punishing his Premier League leaders at Stamford Bridge.
The Chelsea forward condemned Liverpool to a first defeat of the season on Wednesday with a brilliant late winner in the Carabao Cup. The teams meet again on Saturday when Liverpool can establish a five-point lead over Maurizio Sarri’s side with a seventh consecutive victory in the Premier League.

Real Madrid ‘up for the fight’ in derby with Atlético, says Julen Lopetegui
• Marcelo and Isco missing for European champions
Julen Lopetegui has said Real Madrid will be “up for the fight” when they take on their city rivals Atlético in La Liga on Saturday. Real suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat against Sevilla on Wednesday and are desperate to bounce back against Diego Simeone’s team, who beat them on penalties in the European Super Cup in August.

Eden Hazard and the virtue of staying put rather than going for the sake of it | Barney Ronay
Some feel it is just a matter of time before the Belgian leaves Chelsea for Spain but perhaps he realises he may never be quite so brilliant anywhere else
Almost all of the world’s problems, from daily irritations to long-term catastrophe models, are caused by people doing things. It’s not hard to trace the line of cause and effect. Growth, progress, reaching out, growing as a person: these are invariably the areas where things start to go awry, distractions from the safety of idleness, entropy and generally not doing much.
This is not a new idea. The Ten Commandments in the book of Exodus aren’t really commandments in the active sense. They’re prohibitions, warnings against the ancient menace of doing things. As much as you might want to hold an adulterous ass-coveting party in the house of your recently murdered neighbour, the Bible explicitly forbids all of these activities. And for me, Clive, rightly so.

Fulham’s Denis Odoi: ‘At 16 they told me I wouldn’t become a footballer’
“I was thinking I would need to call my agent and look for a new club,” Denis Odoi says as he remembers the stress of watching the closing stages of last season’s Championship play-off final in Fulham’s dressing room at Wembley. Odoi had been reduced to the role of spectator following his red card for a foul on Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish and all he could do was pray that his teammates would bail him out. They were the longest 20 minutes of his life.
Alone in his thoughts, it occurred to the Belgian that he was in danger of going from hero to zero. Two weeks after scoring Fulham’s winner in the semi-final against Derby County, his season was on the verge of ending in despair.

Jon Smith: football’s ‘original super-agent’ and a plan to bring fans on board
Diego Maradona’s former representative is hoping to open an agency in which supporters hold a stake
The location Jon Smith suggests for this interview is a hotel a mile or so north of Cockfosters. On emerging from the very end of the Piccadilly tube line, there are hedgerows and massive houses one after another, the homes of Premier League footballers among others. After a while, the pavement comes to an end but the hotel is still not in sight. Then, from behind a row of trees, a helicopter takes to the air. Oh, it must be in there then.
Smith, using air commas, which he acknowledges using as he does so (“Who does that?”), calls himself football’s “original super-agent”. At different times the representative of Diego Maradona, the entire England football team and James Beattie, Smith – 65 going on 45 – has witnessed the Premier League explosion from the inside. In recent years he has stepped back from the frontline, to act more as an adviser to people keen to invest in the game. These people invariably have a tonne of money. That might be why the hotel Smith calls his local has a helipad outside.

Tottenham wanted rid of Gareth Bale and got lucky, says Mauricio Pochettino
• Bale was an unspectacular left-back in his first Spurs years
• Welshman went on to shine as a winger and join Real Madrid
Mauricio Pochettino has seemingly confirmed one of Tottenham’s dirty secrets – that they were prepared to get rid of Gareth Bale after his initial difficulties at the club.
The manager was discussing the vagaries of the transfer market – in particular, the problems that can come when a Premier League team takes a player from the Championship.

West Ham United v Manchester United: match preview
With Manchester United under pressure after their shock defeat to Derby County in the Carabao Cup, it will be interesting to see if José Mourinho starts Paul Pogba at the London Stadium. United could do with Mourinho and Pogba putting their differences aside for the trip to West Ham, who expect to have Marko Arnautovic available after the Austrian missed last weekend’s draw with Chelsea. Chelsea v Liverpool: match preview
Chelsea’s League Cup win at Anfield in midweek checked Liverpool’s perfect start to the season, but this will be the clash that really counts. Liverpool must fine a way to quell Eden Hazard, or trust in their own formidable front three’s ability to infiltrate and exploit a Chelsea back-line that has, at times, felt rather jittery this term. Maurizio Sarri believes his own side are at least a year behind Jürgen Klopp’s in terms of their development. But, in a one off match, that chasm may not gape quite so wide. Dominic Fifield

Manchester City v Brighton & Hove Albion: match preview
Leaders Liverpool are at Chelsea for the late game so Manchester City have a chance to leapfrog them – for a few hours, at least. Given how City hammered Cardiff 5-0 on the road in their last league outing Pep Guardiola’s side will surely relish a return home against a Brighton side with 11 fewer points. As always, a draw for at the Etihad Stadium would be a fine result for the visitors. Jamie Jackson

Arsenal v Watford: match preview
Arsenal kept the first clean sheet of the Unai Emery era in last Sunday’s home win over Everton but it was entirely down to Petr Cech. The team’s defence remains a work in progress and Watford will surely pose a physical test for it. Will Arsenal be able to hold firm? Or, perhaps, they will simply back themselves to outscore their opponents, who have won on two of their previous four visits to the Emirates Stadium. David Hytner

Huddersfield Town v Tottenham: match preview
Huddersfield need to find a way to start winning games but a visit from Tottenham is unlikely to yield any spark for their season. Christian Eriksen’s creativity might be missed but Mauricio Pochettino has more than enough options to replace the Danish midfielder. Graham Searles

Newcastle United v Leicester City: match preview
Newcastle fans will protest against Mike Ashley’s stewardship of the club outside St James’ Park as kick-off against Leicester approaches. The owner surprised everyone by turning up at Crystal Palace last week to watch Rafa BenÃtez’s side live for the first time in more than a year and Newcastle’s manager would be happy to see him back on Tyneside. “I’m not sure 100% he’s coming on Saturday but, if so, good,” said BenÃtez, whose side have only two points from six games. “If the owner wants to be around it has to be positive. Wolves are unbeaten at home since January and will expect to at least continue that streak against Southampton. Everton v Fulham: match preview
After an inauspicious start – reflected in the joint lowest points return of any Everton manager from their first six league games since 1956 – Marco Silva needs a result that supports talk of positive performances against the Premier League newcomers. Everton have lost their past two matches and their weaknesses in defence and attack were exposed again at Arsenal last weekend. Fulham have had a difficult start on the road, losing at Tottenham and Manchester City, and will give a late fitness test to defender Alfie Mawson. Andy Hunter

Fifa got the Luka Modric decision right at the Best awards but naming Marta as the women’s best sends the wrong signals
Fifa’s annual Best awards were held in London on Monday and it is fair to say they have created much debate. I can see why and no more so, in my opinion, than in regards to the women’s prize. Marta is one of my favourite players, and one of the best players I’ve had the privilege of coming up against, so I say this with the greatest respect: there are other players who were in a much stronger position to be named the best female player of 2018.

Wembley stadium sale to Shahid Khan on course after FA board gives backing
• Board agrees to put matter to FA council in October
The Football Association board has approved in principle the sale of Wembley stadium for £600m to the Fulham and Jacksonville Jaguars owner, Shahid Khan. The proposal, with protection for England, FA Cup and other prestige football matches to be played there, preservation of its name without a sponsor and reassurances that the proceeds will be spent on grassroots facilities, will next be presented to the FA council on 11 October.
An FA spokesperson said: “The sale of Wembley stadium, the negotiated protections and an outlined plan to invest £600m into football community facilities, were presented and discussed at the FA board meeting today. Following on from this discussion, the FA board has agreed to take the presentation to the FA council to get its input now that the full facts are known.”

Mauricio Pochettino praises calmer, more mature captain Dele Alli
• Pochettino: ‘I hope it will help him improve even more’
Mauricio Pochettino has said Dele Alli is now a calmer and more mature player, as he praised the way the midfielder handled his first experience of captaining Tottenham.
The manager gave Alli the responsibility for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie against Watford at Stadium MK, which Spurs won on penalties after a 2-2 draw. It was the first time Alli had played at the stadium since his days at MK Dons and the player believes it was written in the stars that he should score the winning penalty. He had earlier equalised from the spot for 1-1.

Everton move helped me to become England’s keeper, says Jordan Pickford
• Former Sunderland No 1 has just signed new six-year deal
Jordan Pickford has spoken about his “whirlwind of a year” after signing a new six-year contract at Everton and said he might not have got the call to play for England at the World Cup had he not moved to Merseyside.
The goalkeeper believes he needs to be in the Premier League to be considered for his country but also acknowledges he has improved since leaving his native Sunderland. “All the coaches I have worked with in the past year have helped me get better,” the 24-year-old said. “It’s been a great leap for me personally in a short time but I believe all the new challenges have improved my game massively. I’ve just signed a new contract that will take me up to the age of 30, so it feels like a progression is being made. My only ambition is to keep playing every week for a club that is heading in the right direction.”

Why is no one at Manchester United stopping this unedifying spectacle?
A new dimension to the José Mourinho-Paul Pogba saga has been provided by Dimitar Berbatov, rapidly making a name for himself in a Sybil Fawlty specialist-subject-the bleedin’-obvious kind of way as a spokesman for a gambling company. “Football should be about what happens on the pitch, not who has the biggest dick,” the former Manchester United striker said. “I’m fed up of seeing these headlines, you are all grown-ups and this sort of thing really needs to be kept in-house.”

Seema Jaswal: ‘We’re seeing more women in sports media, but there’s still a long way to go’
The idea that there might be barriers in her way did not occur to Seema Jaswal until, soon after deciding that a role in front of the cameras was the ideal way forward, a chance conversation arose with her family’s neighbour. “She’s an older lady, a lovely person who had seen me grow up,” she says. “When I told her I wanted to be on television she said: ‘Seema, things like that don’t happen to people like us.’ And I remember thinking: ‘But why?’”
Jaswal has spent the subsequent decade proving that statement wrong. She is a familiar face to millions, hosting Premier League Productions’ worldwide coverage of the English top flight and covering a range of sports across most of the major domestic channels. She was a roving reporter for ITV’s World Cup team in Russia, vox-popping around host cities at one stroke and mediating pundits’ pitchside discussions the next; football is her focus and she is acutely aware that, as a woman of Asian heritage in her early 30s, she is beating a path that has not always been open to those before her.

‘Barça bad, Madrid worse’ – the night the underdogs bit back in La Liga
There are only two teams in Spain and both of them lost on Wednesday night.
Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde hadn’t even arrived in the press room at Butarque where his team had just been beaten 2-1 by Leganés when 542km away Real Madrid went a goal down to Sevilla. He hadn’t been sitting there much more than 60 seconds – about the time it had taken Leganés to score twice – when a ripple went round the room, as Madrid went two down. And he’d only just walked out when Madrid conceded a third, Sergio Busquets still standing there through a side door, head bowed, while outside happy fans headed home, car radios on, edging past the multicoloured 10m-high Lega-ness monster rising from its roundabout lake, barely able to believe what they’d seen – or what they were hearing.

Sarri’s Chelsea are match for Liverpool but Kanté poses midfield puzzle | Jonathan Wilson
Saturday’s league meeting offers another chance to see two sides with similar setups but Jorginho’s arrival has pushed N’Golo Kanté out of his comfort zone
Press against press, 4-3-3 against 4-3-3, wide forwards who cut in against wide forwards who cut in, attacking full-back against attacking full-back: Chelsea against Liverpool on Saturday, Maurizio Sarri against Jürgen Klopp, will be a meeting of two very similar conceptions of football. Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup meeting, even with significantly altered line-ups, highlighted those similarities, and also the fact that the main difference lies in midfield. Chelsea may have won at Anfield, but it is in the centre that Liverpool perhaps have an edge.

Bundesliga fans give DFB the silent treatment as Dortmund hit seven
The standoff between supporters and the DFB led to silent protests during Englische Woche but Dortmund still brought the noise
It was almost surreal. Signal Iduna Park, that fullest and famously atmospheric of European grounds, was reduced to a murmur on match night. You could repeatedly hear the sound of boot on ball as a crowd of 75,000 sat in near silence, a vigil only broken for a modest cheer as Jacob Bruun Larsen scored to give hosts Borussia Dortmund an early lead against Nürnberg.
Dortmund weren’t alone in the domestic season’s first Englische Woche, with supporters across the midweek Bundesliga fixtures electing not to chant, sing, drum or support in any audible way during the first 20 minutes of their respective games, in protest at the Deutscher Fußball-Bund’s (DFB) position in the standoff between the governing body and various supporter groups.
